Please watch the video. Are the two "wheels" really being "fused" via friction only?http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/81732304/Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:yup, this is quite common practice.I saw one were they had two giant disks which they spun each up really fast and then slammed them into each other. BAM! instant bond
Reply:A rather common industrial process these days. Here is another video with some simple explanations in the narrative.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:Thanks I will use that in class (8th grade). I have never seen that before.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Some turbocharger manufacturers used to weld the things together, that way.

Reply:I have blown up more than one motor with the power of friction.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:And that sure looked like a Cat track roller. I believe they've been doing it that way for quite a few yrs.                                                  MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:In the second video, Is the piece re-machined or is it left with that big glob of weld showing?? That also seems like a big waste of material...after a couple hundred thousand/million of those a year; that's allot of wasted material and/or machining time..
Reply:That is how valves in a engine are put together.

Reply:Thank you Miller killer!!!!! TMIThanks to all I nver new this was so common.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:I'v seen this process used in plastics too.I think this is a great example or my theory that all welding consists of three things, heat, pressure and time. A given mass needing a weld will require a calculable amount of energy divided by the three energy measures time heat and pressure. Mr science please comment.Last edited by Fat Bastard; 08-12-2011 at 08:22 PM.
Reply:FBIf I'm Mr. Science I can not comment much (I'm not a metallurgist) . I do have some training in other areas of science however. Given enough Time - Heat or  Pressure or a combination of, amazing things can happen/change. Pangaea, diamonds from coal are two cool examples.I'm not sure what you mean by the "three energy measures time heat and pressure". Anyway the video will generate questions and thought, Thanks for the input FBDave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Pressure is a measure of energy Heat is as well Time too measures energy.
Reply:I agree heat = energy but I disagree with the other points: Pressure = force/areaTime = TimeNo big deal I get the point.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Originally Posted by bruceryes, its called inertia friction welding.. I've seen prototype tractor trailer rims welded together like this in the past...
Reply:Go talk to the physics prof. my terms might be incorrect but the idea / concept is sound.
Reply:I did this with a drill bit once on my trailer repair.I had a 10mm drill bit that was a bit blunt and I started to weld through my 5mm trailer side bracket. The bit got blunter and blunter and started to smoke and squeal.  I kept at it, not because I had any hope of getting the hole finished, but as an experiment to see what the end result would be.The friction melted the drill bit and it welded itself to my trailer.Damm that thing was hard to remove !!
Reply:This is interesting too! Friction strir welding!
Reply:Did this with a half inch masonry bit when trying to drill through dimensional brick to install some cabling, it made a pretty smooth and clean looking steel plug in the brick.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.Japanese dirt bike manufacturers use friction welding to attach a steel valve stem to a titanium valve head for their intake valves.
