ASME Welder Certification

ASME has got to be the most complicated set of rule and guidlines ever, makes the tax code seem sophomoric.I want to be certified to weld on steam & pressure vessels as my self (not as group, no stamp). So as I understand it, I can be certified under Section 9?How does this work? There is a book, but it is expensive and not available at my local library.Do I need the book for the skill demonstration? Where can I go to get tested? What cost can I expect? I am in the Carolinas & Arizona. I have searched the ASME site but it is a jumbled mess. I am just looking to get ASME on my resume, to go along with my AWS and ANSI credentials. I don't to complete any steam project on my own. Just the basics.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:The books are big money....I read somewhere they're like 4K for all sections, look for section IX in the library.

Reply:Thanks, I had all but given up! I found a few companies that provide certifaction services, but they were expensive.  Like AWS, is there a "certified testing facility" equivalent?Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:I am not a section IX code committee  member. Only a user of section IX. In section IX alone, there is no provisions for ano organization to test and qualify a welder for another company. The organization that will be employing the welder is the organization that "signs the bottom line" on the qw484. Some ansi piping codes that refer to section IX have paragraphs that modify the restrictions above and allow contractors to accept qualifications of people tested by other organizations.Just having a qualified welder does not mean you are doing "code" work. Without tge codes, how do you know what to do when repairing piping systems? Is RT required, PWHT, what materials are allowed? I think there is a misconception that all that is required for a good weld its that often referred to term "certified welder". As for the comparison of Sec ix to d1.1, Sec ix rules are much easier to locate. Just my ok opinion. Just sitting here waiting for a repaired st eam line to be tested.
Reply:For the majority of States across the U.S. steam boiler repair, by law, must be performed by an organization in possession of a valid Certificate issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors. Generally recognized by the “R” Stamp Symbol, this certification means that the companies making the repairs have gone through a rigorous authorization process for R Stamp welding which ensures a safe and reliable steam boiler repair that is made under warranty. This includes Steam piping in alot of instances
