I am wanting a different mailbox, so post some pics of some cool ones you have seen over the years, I liked the engines but more of a country theme for me

Reply:Anybody ever have any trouble form the carrier or postmaster?  Do you get pre-approval for custom mailboxes?  Postal code is pretty specific and they do not have to deliver to a non conforming box.  I thought I read in their rules it must be a store bought box?Miller 185Lincoln Weldanpower 225Lincoln 225 buzz boxCheap-o C&H 110v (my first welder)
Reply:Around here, if you don't have an official postmaster approved mailbox to actually put the mail in, they will not deliver your mail. Here is the one I built about 5 years ago. The auger is 2.25" solid shaft and the flites are 3/8" T1 that is from an underfed stoker hogfueled boiler I used to operate. The "box" is 8" tube that I cut the top out of and ripped a piece of 10" extra heavy pipe to weld on the top. I wanted it to look like a mailbox from the side so it would be hit. I used to replace it about 3 times a year. Attached Images
Reply:I can speak from experience that the mailman will not object unless the door is off or the mail can not be secured. They get a kick out of all of the unique and original mail boxes on their routes. Obviously, you can't have a running fued with your mailman or postmaster, as they can hold you to the letter of the law and deem it nonapproved. But all welders are nice guys, Right?
Reply:It was the same around here until about 8-9 months ago. The new mail "person" left a copy of the regulations in everybodies boxes and they had 20 days to comply. I had to dig mine up, it's set in concrete, and raise it 6" because it was set for the previous mail carriers that all had cars and she bought a righthand drive Jeep. After a half hour digging, I hooked onto with my truck and in 4-low just as the tires started to break traction on the pavement, it moved. Without concrete it weighs around 250-300 lbs. and was in the ground quite deep.

Reply:I don't have a picture of it but my brother was replacing mailboxes about monthly.  So he put the new mail box on it's end and placed a 2 liter bottle inside and then filled it with cement.  Once it dried he cut the top of the bottle off and put the box up.  It looks like a regular mail box from the outside but it is SOLID.

Reply:We don't have problems with people trashing our's (live out in the country) but every once in a while when the state snow plow's run down the highway the force of the snow blows mine off the post, I've been thinking about building one with a spare oxygen s cylinder of mine for the post (with some sch. 40 pipe underneath cement'ed into the ground). Need some ideas for the box itself.
Reply:This is the mailbox that I built last fall.Box is made mostly of 3/8" steel plate, top is a halved pipe, rest is made of 2 3/8"OD pipe in 3/16" and 1/4" wall thicknesses. It has a magnetic latch inside at the top to hold the door closed. Box weighed 60# before I welded any of the pipe to it!The top part of the T sits onto the post which is a smaller pipe sunk into cement. there is also another 2 3/8" pipe welded to the post below the T to help support the weight of the whole thing. The T can spin freely if the box were to get hit by a baseball bat, or if hit by a car, the whole unit should lift right off of the post. Last pic shows the bottom of the T where the whole thing can rotate on the post. I used what I had laying around for materials, Oxweld torches to cut, and my old Craftsman stick welder to put it together. Have not had any vandals try it yet

Reply:Ok SpyGuyHere is a little more back ground on my mailbox.Like I said I built this with scrap steel, mostly 14 gage sheet and 2" box tube, some pipe and mooring chain. The base is from a hemlock tree that I shaped with a chain saw its over 6' tall,  The "fish, dragon" on top is also a little over 7' long and it will spin around on a windy day. The idea for the Fish just came to me when I was looking at the scrap pile. This piece has survived many hits from the big town snowplows in the winter, a car crash. The driver hit black ice than hit the mailbox and ended up hitting the oak tree behind it. That was unlucky for the driver.  Also a Molotov cocktail inside the box, the fire dept. showed up for that one, and many whacks from baseball bats and lately a 10# rock thrown from a passing car. That messed up the mailbox. All thanks to the local youth.                                                                   I have many more pices like this out in the fields around my shop.Steve

Reply:Here's my mailbox: The heart of the system is a 4" pipe held together with a 3" flange. Then I machined some bushings so I could undersize the connecting bolts. Basically it's an indestructible top post and an indestructible foundation (800+ lbs concrete). The then two halves are held together with 5/16" shear bolts. The actual mailbox itself is just stamped sheet metal . . . . . that'll get beefed up next time it's hit The complete build is detailed here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...a20e667&type=1 Attached Images

Reply:Well, I'm a newby who will mostly 'lurk' around this website (that's how I learn)...but I just had to say, that 44 magnum is the craziest mailbox I've ever seen. And I've seen some dillys since I've been a rural letter carrier for over 20 years. The other pics on this thread are really nice, too..only some are too short to serve. Those who make them should be mindful that a new box set should be a minimum of 40" from the bottom of the box to the ground where the delivery vehicles wheels roll. I hate to see handcrafted boxes set out that I am not allowed to serve....D

Reply:Now why would you want anyone thinking that I turn wood? I just watch Hubby do that. (Thank you for the welcome.) However, I ran across a coil of some beautifully tarnished copper tube hanging outside my studio and thought I might pull it out and make some kind of yard art, crank up the torch and get crazy....I'd love to hear any ideas. The tubing is about 3/4" to 1" and I have several feet of it.D
