Ok so I want to start my own welding business. Catered mainly for TIG and MIG welding. My question is where would I start for getting my name out there? I have a machine (Dynasty 200 DX) and many fabrication tools already. And iv have been proficient in TIG and MIG for about 8 years now. But I have no clue where to start. I read "tips and tricks" on "how to start a welding business" and plan on using some ideas. But is anyone successful on a welding business mainly catered for TIG welding? And what type of businesses should I reach out too? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!!!

Reply:Think about what businesses need your services. Tig says stainless and alum. For stainless, I'd shoot for commercial kitchens and restaurants, but you will need to be able to so sanitary welds and be equipped to back gas all your welds. Food service industries like meat processors, bottling and dairy, breweries, wineries and so on would all fall under this area as well.2nd area I'd look at is marine work. Alum and stainless boat parts and repairs. You might also pick up some work on brass and bronze. I'd hit marina's and boat yards as well as stopping to talk to anyone who does marine repairs.Another area I've thought about has been small engine repairs. Older motors are becoming more valuable, especially with a lot of the newer "clean" crap that manufacturers are forced to go with. If you can cost effectively repair damaged alum castings, you may be able to save guys some money. It's going to be a tight market. You have to be able to do the job well and cheap enough that the repair guy can still get the job in under the cost of a new unit. You might want to go in on a commission type deal where you agree to do the repair for X percentage of the job. This would let the repair guy give a reasonable price to the customer while knowing you won't exceed a set price. You'll have to either guarantee the work, or go in with the understanding that if it fails, you get nothing for your effort.Aviation would also be an idea, but you will need to have good certs in this area to do work on aircraft. The FAA is a bit particular about who can or can not work on aircraft. Makoman here would be the one to contact if you wanted to look at going this route. Of all of them this would probably be the hardest way to go unless you are into aviation already. You will probably have to spend a lot of time pounding the pavement, knocking on doors and talking to people and leaving your card. These types of repairs often aren't things people need done every day.  When they need it done, they'll either go to the phone book or online to hunt someone down, or go with a suggestion from someone else in the business who's had it done before. What you want them to do is remember you, and call you 1st. Be sure you know what you are doing and do it right and don't cut corners. Sanitary welds will either save the customer big money, or cost them a fortune if you F it up. Get a good reputation and after a while your name will get out there as a "go to" guy for stuff like this. F up one or two, and you'll get the reputation as the guy who cost them big money with your screw up. Same thing applies to boat work.  Run a plain steel wire wheel on stainless boat rail, and within a few weeks it will be all rusty. The owner will NOT be happy, no matter how cheap your price was. Work like this will spread quickly in the marina and no one will want you any where near their boat..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:If you can do railing and ramps. Contact the General Contractors in your area. They will have metal railings, etc. Ask if they have any projects with those items to bid. If you have a good bid you can get alot of work that way.
