Hello im currently building a safety lift for my work. it has 3 bye 3 square tubing corner posts quarter inch thick is tubing thickness. trailer neck type stuff. the open ends point up. i got some cast iron caps from a friend. i need to weld these onto the corner posts. im hoping some ornamental guys would be able to say how to do this. and im really hoping this can be done with a mig or stick i have access to 180c lincoln mig ranger 225 dc gas machine idealarc 250 shop machine. a 110 lincoln mig. and oxy acetylene setup. i have access to a lincoln 225 tig but have never used it so im sure that would be a total screw up. following are some pics of the post and the cap. thanks in advance! Reply:I know that there are rods specifically for welding cast to steel. There will be someone on here that knows better than me but if I remember right 7024 should work.Miller Dynasty 300 DXMiller CST280Miller Maxstar 150 STH
Reply:Yes, there are rods and wires suitable for such things, but if the caps are only ornamental, why not just use an adhesive, perhaps silicone sealer for the job? Cheaper, easier, and better if you decide to remove them later.Just because we can weld it doesn't mean that's always the best way.
Reply:You could glue it with an epoxy. Perhaps braze. drill and screw, nickel rod. If you are powder coating don't epoxy. However your project sounds industrial or commercial. Why not cap it with a plate? or fab a similar cap from steel. It would be more durable for industrial application. That cast cap will break readily. or order steel caps.
Reply:I would glue it after any powdercoat and use Seal All glue.
Reply:I'm with tapwelder. Use plate. If you tube is 3x3 then cut your plates 2 3/4"x 2 3/4", center them, weld, and buff with grinder. My name's not Jim.... |
