I've got a CBR400 that i've started to fit a turbo onto and i've got some pictures of the work so far. I fitted the different tail unit and custom subframe earlier in the year. The turbo is off a smart fourtwo 600cc.First things first, chopping it up. Need to cut down the manifold and weld on a new flange plate.Need to weld up that curve and port it out a bit to give me more surface area and make it nice and straight.Have to weld it up first. First pass.5 passes later....This bit needs filled in. Clean it up and it's ready to weld. Some welding later...More coming soon.
Reply:Time to grind
Reply:Started on the flange plate. I cut the slot in it so I know where to start cutting the rest out from.Root pass. I could only turn the welder up to 100 amps for some reason, think there's something wrong with the torch. It's a big awkward air cooled one aswell, would love a water one. If you look to the far right you can see where there is some porosity in the weld. Probably missed a little bit of dirt when grinding it. Needed to grind it down a bit then go over it a couple of times.Final passes. Now I need to drill the bolt holes, finish cutting the big hole then I can start on the headers.
Reply:Look like a lot of work but I love projects like this. Keep us up to date on this.Last edited by jamlit; 11-16-2008 at 10:34 AM.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Where are you located to even get a CBR400?? They don't bring those into thew US market, unfortunately. That turbo looks like a lot of work; hope it goes well. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:There was like a "Half Crown" or somethin' on the second pic.  Now don't jump me on this, I don't know coins from a hole in the groundThen when ya gotta guy sayin' "bit" a lot, it sorta lets ya know he ain't from round these parts.  Either that, or he's an interior decorator on the Today ShowThe job looks good, and way beyond what my skill level is.  Go Beardy!!"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:they brought cbr and fzr 400s into the us , i raced em both. I shoehorned a f2 motor in the 400 and it was almost as much fun as my yzf750 with a fzr1000 motor. i spent 2 years building the OW-01 and they released the first R1s a few weeks later.i still love the yams, but i was converted to Triumphs when they built the 1050 speed triplesinsert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it

Reply:Yep, it would take me all of about 15 seconds to kill myself on that thing.
Reply:on the fzr400 the fzr 600 engine went right in, the 1000 in the 750 frame sucked, but was fun to ride.not nearly as much fun as my triumph thoughinsert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:From the UK. I was trying to figure out where you got a turbo from a smart car already.... but they have been in the UK for a while. Have you seen the smart car with the Busa motor shoved in it.... runs like crazy.....  People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because it's safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs.  Unknown Pro Mig 175Hyphertherm 600Lots of toys at work

Reply:wow.. defintiely badass.. how much boost are you gonna run? i can help you with flow calcs and parts and stuff.. i'm building a (hopefully) 250HP boosted 12000 ZX7-R myself.. gonna use a 50 trim T3 wit a .48 hotside. thats gotta be a killer small A/R on that for a 600 motor and to spool effectively.. i'd gues a .25?  wow.. very cool.. i never even saw a CBR400 before.. keep it up man!!http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:These are all the splinters you don't want to get on your hands.Die grinder with a carbide bur, wouldn't have been able to cut it out without this. Need to get some more of them. Cut this offNow I have to measure the plate and draw one up to be laser cut in stainless and get this one faced. Then I can drill the holes and finish shaping it. Maybe I can find a better camera while I'm at it.
Reply:Great work you have going on there.....I had a CB1 which was a 400-4. Only imported in 88 and 89.....I just recently sold it to a museum. It was "Showroom" condition. Here is a GREAT thread on a Supercharged Honda VFR. Talk about amazing machine work. And a supercharger is really the way to go with a lightweight motorcycle........http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/i...pic=31492&st=0Roy BDartmouth, Mahttp://www.rvbprecision.comMM 185 MIGDiversion 165Purox W200 O/AGrizzly 9957 MillGrizzly 4030 Metal Band SawGrizzly 1050 Knife Belt SanderJet 1236 Metal LatheCM 14" Metal Band SawTP Blast Cabinet

Reply:wow.. soo awesome  DIGGING the boosted VFR as well!! haha.. that is sick.. i love the sound of those things.. they already sound liek they've got a blower!! i can't imagine what it sounded like WITH a blower!! haha that 400 is going to be a screamer.. as a builder, i wouldn't go any further than 7psi persoally on stock internals other than on maybe a busa. lol man. that sucks about the gear drive cams.. i thought that bike was chain driven.. Hmm. that rules out a base gasket AND head gasket!! man!!.. you'll almost HAVE to do dished pistons, or go with a shorter con rod.. you'll  lose a CC or 2 of displacement, but you'll make up for it if you can run 11psi or so!!ya.. my bike should be interesting.. i'm building literally everything from scratch.. and i wanna do 4things with it.. shows, (NO trailer queen.. i refuse!! lol) , strip, street and LSR.. (land speed record) i wanna run the maxton mile and own all those big shot pro builders in the 750 non pushrod class.. i want to break 200MPH. and i won't stop til i do!! man..        .28      thats awesome!! haha that bad boyy otta spool RIGHT NOW.  lolhttp://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:none of the images are loading up for me, anyone else having this issue?
Reply:That's likely due to the fact that this thread is nearly three years old. He either deleted or moved his photos so the links are no good anymore. Try contacting the thread starter if you're interested in his project.
