I have to build a fence. It will have pickets at 1/2" sq bar extended through 1" channel. One channel runs parallel to the ground at top and bottom. My question. What is a good method of minimizing/eliminating warpage? I would not have to straighten them after fabrication. I am leaning toward pre-bending the panel.Thanks.
Reply:??? anybody got a good technique

Reply:Not much warpag on the channel, as the hole is in the middle, and it doesn't need a huge wed to hold it together.
Reply:Thanks, Perhaps I typically put too much weld/heat. My panels do warp slightly, not off the table, but form a slight "u" down in direction of welds. It is slight but visable.
Reply:Heat control and clamping have worked best for me. One of my jigs consists of two pieces of 4" "H" beam (13 pound per foot) with 1 1/2" x 3/16" angle iron tabs tacked to the top. I space them accordingly, square/level them up, then clamp to my welding table. The channel then gets clamped to each tab. In situations where I'm not using punched channel, I lay a piece of 1/4" x 3/4" flat stock down so 1/2" pickets will be centered onto the channel. Once I have a section completely welded, I leave it clamped till cool then remove it from the jig.
Reply:Thanks. My fixture looks similar to yours. I have built some of the panels and I am quite satisfied with how they are looking. Thanks for the suggestions. |
