Just picked this up at lowes.Last one on clearance and the manager took my offer of 100.00.I need a torch mainly for heating and bending  rod up to 1/2 inch for hinge pins and stuff.Might cut 3/8 and under from time to time but mainly just for bending rod and flat bar. Will this do the trick or do I need a more substantial kit? Thanks, Ken Attached Images
Reply:Torch sure the cylinders will have a limited volume, and might not be refillable.Last edited by Fat Bastard; 09-30-2010 at 05:20 PM.Reason: sp
Reply:You did good for a cateye. If this is your first O/A setup, you might find yourself running through the bottles rather quickly, because you have them on hand now.
Reply:when you get to heating your stuff, try the welding tip. you might find it gives enough heat for what you need and will use less gas than a cutting tip..doesnt look like yer set includes a rosebud..
Reply:Some people put up posts that just show how little they know about welding.Anybody want to guess how large an acetylene bottle it takes to run a rosebud? It dang sure isn't going to fit in that tote cart.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:You can run a rosebud with the smaller tanks, just not for long!!  I have a couple of those kits, and that's not a bad price.  Most all your local welding supply stores will exchange the tanks, but don't expect them to be as nice looking as the tanks on the cart now.  Portable kits are great for just that, moving from place to place.  But if you do any extended amount of heating or cutting, the tanks simply won't last long.  You're really better off with the largest set of tanks you can get, as the price for exchange really isn't that much different between the smaller and larger bottles.

Reply:That set generally retails for anywhere from $295-$450 ay LWS, but took a guick gander through the Grainger catolog here in Can, the comparable set w/Victor Pro torch set $721, Victor Cutskill Torch set $594 without tanks $492 so they are putting a value on tanks and caddy at $125 and $132 respectively. The value was good.

Reply:Even if the bottles are small, they should be refillable. You may have to leave them at the store to get them refilled, or they may have to be sent off.  My local store just swaps out customer owned cylinders with other customer owned cylinders, even the smaller ones.  Whatever the case, the torch should fit larger tanks.  The regulator set is probably worth the 100.00 or more. Reply:Jason and his smartmout partner JackA$$,If you knew anything about ox/ace heating welding, you'd know about the withdrawl rate for acetylene. The smallest "Rosebud/heating tip" for a Smith (that's who I have the book for) torch is the MT603.  That tip consumes 28 SCFH of fuel gas.  Using the 1/7th rule, the minimum size bottle to feed that torch would be 196 cu ft.  Using the more updated 1/10th standard the bottle would need to be 280 cu ft.Exceeding the withdrawl rate will result in acetone being drawn thru the regulator (trashing it) and being fed to the torch.  Best way I know of to set off an acetylene explosionYou CAN NOT just use a smaller bottle, unless you manifold them together so that the total volume equals the volume required to meet the withdrawl rate. Both you freaking newbies should keep your comments to yourself when you don't have a clue what you're talking about. There's a REASON heating tips/rosebuds are not included with these hobbiest kits from the box stores.  It should have never been brought up in the original discussion.  The OP can do all the heating he needs with the provided welding or cutting tips and the small bottles.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Listen,I have been a contractor for 30 years, your kind are the one's we avoid at all cost.No matter how much you know it is how you communicate that makes the man.Your out of the service now and you should act like it.You were the one that started this pissing match and and most of the ones I have seen on WW that you posted in,you started.I know you have great knowledge in this field and I know from life that there is a great person in there somewhere but that wall of ego/attitude keeps him from being known to others. What a shame.
Reply:Sundown, take it easy. No need to rip him a hole; you could take a minute to explain it to him FIRST. Then, if he trips out on you, you can 'explain it to him....'Consider it a warning. You have done really good for a long time, and I enjoy your posts. Try to keep them positive and informative. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:To the OP; the little torches are a great value. You can get into a jam, and need a little extra metal softening than you can get with just a BFH. And though these won't cook stuff all day, they will make short work of a busted off stud, heat up a grumpy header bolt, cook out a rubber bushing you need to make more agreeable with you. Heck, they can burn the whole truck to the ground just like the bigger torches if you aren't careful!!!And, you can buy larger bottles and expand the time and capability of the torch. I will suggest if you do not have one a simple basic welding book that offers info on O/A welding and brazing. I use my smaller torches for silver brazing and bronze/ nickel brazing a lot. And yeah, they will heat up a bent piece of metal so I can straighten it out. No sweat. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Reply:Being a retired 70 yo Jack of all trades, when I came across this site, I thought hey! this is right up one of my alley's.  But it looks like the economy or the A$$ Holes on Cap Hill is turning some Gent's into a bunch of Grump's.  In spite of this, I guess I'll hang around for a little while cause I don't get enough bitching from the Little Lady.  Not to mention there is a lot of good info if you read between the lines.Uncle Tom
