Hey guys-This is a pig roaster I've been working on for a while - not much time to finish it up.  Anyway the trailer was one my grandpa built and was sitting behind my dads barn, got the diesel tank from a buddy of my cousin and my cousin built the gearbox (used to work at a gearbox rebuilding plant)/motor assembly.  To be continued....Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:Continued-as you can see the tank twisted a bit when I cut it apart and since I couldn't get it lined up perfect I took it off.... for now.  Anyway, the last picture is me standing next to it during our test roast - about a 50lb lamb.  Turned out good but I found out I'm not a huge fan of lamb.  The roaster worked GREAT!  Eventually it'll get sand blasted and painted w/ BBQ paint. Also - it will eventually get a lot more supports welded on, this is just a test to make sure it works.  Thanks for looking.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:what size pigs are you planning on roasting?Any concern with heat getting to those tires? Maybe a fire brick liner to help prevent that? I'm not familar with trailer bbq pits. So forgive me is I'm totally missing something here. but that would be my concern with your set up.There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Generally about 100-150lb.  Not massive, but not small either.  With this system the heat is funneled right up to the pig, unlike over an open fire, so you can use a lot less heat.  That was part of this test though.  They got hotter due to direct sunlight (in WASHINGTON) than they did on the "heat" side.  Anyway, it's in the back of my mind and if they get hot I'll just pull them off for the roast.  Eventually it will have levelers on each corner anyway (which would serve a 2nd purpose of lowering the whole thing down a foot or so making it easier to load the pig).Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:It would probably be easier to just do a heat sheild to protect the tires, but if you need the lower height I can understand taking them off. I'm aslo in western washington so I totally understand the sun comment. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:It might be easier - but eventually I'll probably have some storage built right there for roasting tools so it'll be blocked.  We'll see - it's still in the development phase.  Nice "summer" we've had, huh?  I guess I can't complain though, we didn't get hammered with crazy heat...Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:definately not complaining about the weather. my wife on the other hand, is from indiana, and hasn't considered this a summer. Can never please the woman. anyway the storage in itself would act as a heat sheild in itself. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Since most of the heat on the tires is going to be radiative, a simple sheet metal shield will probably solve any problems.I'd first try finishing out the inside of the fender.  If that's not enough I'd put another sheet between the fender and cooker with maybe  a 1" standoff from the fender.  Leave enough open places to let the air flow up between the two sheets.  Polished aluminum is really good at reflecting infrared.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I was planning on the storage being the heat shield.  Like I said though, it never got hot at all on the rubber.  It's basically just smoldering in there, I didn't use charcoal or anything.  You want to roast them on pretty low heat...Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:Have you thought about doing a pivoting arm system on your spit that would allow the whole spit to swing out to the front of the roaster, and lower the spit at the same time? this would help with your loading, eliminate the need to remove the tires, and help carry the load of the "roast".There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Yep - the spit pivots on the support on the motor side.  The other side has a slip fit into a tube which can be lifted out and rotated around to make it easier to load.  I haven't designed up an adjustable height feature yet, but it's on the list of things to build.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:Would be cool if you could put a little pig crane on it hah :]
Reply:hey - now there's an idea!  Gat dangit.  why do people always have to go around suggesting ridiculous things like that, I might just have to rig one up.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
