I'm taking a basic welding class at my highschool (9th Grade - they offer 3 years of welding classes), learning the mig, tig, oxy-acetylene torch, plasma cutter etc...I tried the mig welder the other day, running a few beads then welding two peices together, and wondering how you all think I did, the teacher seemed happy with it and I enjoy doing it so far so here are some pictures. *I took the pictures before I cleaned them off, and I know the metal isn't clean and sorry if its not the right angle for a picture Attached Images
Reply:For being in high school and those being your first welds you did GREAT!  Keep up the good work man!

Reply:was that on the first day? That's awesome...I feel like I'm going real slow in my classes. I've been running practice beads in the flat position for probably four weeks now... but I can rip through some 6011 and 7018 these days. I think my instructor wants us to be able to lay beads with our eyes closed before we try to stick anything together... I'm getting restless though!

Reply:I'm real jealous. I really want to try TIG, but they are keeping us on SMAW for a while... I'm hoping I can get a little bit of burn time with the TIG but probably not until the end.

Reply:I'm taking classes at my local community college. The teacher is amazing, but he's being very 'thorough.'I've probably burned 25 lbs of 7018 and 6011 rod on just practice beads. Still haven't stuck anything together. hahaLast edited by Taiden; 10-16-2010 at 09:14 PM.

Reply:When I ask my instructor to look at my welds, he looks at them and smiles and laughs. Then I ask him what to change and he says "Don't change a damn thing"It's not like I'm not getting it, it's practice. Wish I had pics of my beads. When I say I still haven't stuck anything together, I mean that we haven't been doing that in class. Just been running beads in the flat position.
