Picked up a 45kva Onan for a backup as well as for mobile power, tried to get a few pics of the trailer build. Its all 3x3x1/4" box. Have to get fenders built and add some mount points for fuel tank and gen set. Hopefully next weekend. Attached Images
Reply:Nice build!   I like the end caps on the side tubes-vs-mitered corners. If you have natural gas or propane at the house/shop you may want to consider setting that in-line Ford up as a dual fuel to eliminate (NG) or reduce (propane) refueling periods during stand-by operations.  Impco - for one - has everything you'd need and one can usually find the necessary items on ebay for a resonable price.Keep the photos coming.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I have the propane setup sitting on the bench..
Reply:Well there you go.  Is it set up that way now?  I can't quite make out if that's a carburetor or fuel mixer.  Kinda looks like an electric choke on the front side.Last edited by duaneb55; 07-05-2011 at 07:32 AM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:No doubt that trailer will carry it's load!I want to comment on the fab table.  Awesome!  How heavy is that?  How do the bent bars work as clamps?  Just wedge 'em in?-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:Generator is around 2200# as it sits now. There will be a gasoline tank on the trailer, along side the gen set. I'm looking for a weatherproof "breaker box" for it now, It will mount on the trailer along with a few 240 and 120 outlets and the umbilical cord (1/0-4) to go to the transfer switch on the house. From what I've read it is capable of full output on propane, it should only require about 90 hp at full load. The welding table is 5' x 5' and weighs 2490# (just the top). The bent bars are indeed the clamps, just hit them on the top of the bend to lock them down and on the side to release.

Reply:Nice trailer and useing the best steel I see too. Were was that made again HMMM that great big place north of your border...OH ya  I remember now. Sweet genny too. I'd love to that same build.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:The build looked pretty good till I saw the axles. My name's not Jim....
Reply:looks solid
Reply:Don't like shortened axles?
Reply:Originally Posted by Stroked550Don't like shortened axles?
Reply:Axles were shortened properly. I think the mobile home axles/tires get a unfair bad rap. They are great for their intended use and more, however most you see on homemade trailers have antique tires and poor maintainence. This was trailer was built from stuff that I had on hand, it wil never get more than a few hundred miles of use in the next 20 years. Didn't make sense to spend 800+ on axles/wheels/tires.
Reply:Very nice.I like the frame design.I've seen what happens when a 60 kw generator frame breaks on thehighway at 65 m.p.h. Pretty ugly.Frame broke right where angled tongue pieces join front cross member.(trailer was built by a well-known trailer manufacturer) Looks like that type of faliure couldn't happen with yours..Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion EliteMassive overkill, don't care for the hubs/wheels either.  But a well built trailer that will last decades without a doubt.  Mobile home axles are a piece of cake to shorten properly and they can be had for next to nothing or many times for nothing...LOL.  Love the end caps as well. Now that welding table is the cat's meow.  We built one pretty much identical to it maybe 20yrs ago but it doesn't weigh near what yours does.  Used bent schedule 40 tubing for the clamps, works great.Looking forward to seeing it completed.
Reply:It's easy to swap hubs for something else if ever needed, and since it's dual-axle no biggee if one hub goes bad around the farm.

Reply:Originally Posted by dumb as a stumpIs that axle set a little too far to the back? AH shuks what do I know.
Reply:Set to the back on purpose, gen set will be towards the back with the breaker panel and outlets towards the front of the trailer.
Reply:Progress has been a bit slow recently, got married, honeymoon, ect. Fenders are done, just have to put a mount on for a breaker panel and blast/paint. Fenders are 10" jr channel and light brackets are 3/16" Attached Images
Reply:I say it again - NICE build.  Congratulations on the marriage and looking forward to seeing more on the trailer project.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:That is some awesome work! What did you make those patches out of? (the one's that hide the ends of the boxes). Is the top of your welding table made out of solid steel? Was it some sort of grate or did you make that too?

Reply:Nice build. I guess I'm an odd ball, I like the axles, meaty looking for lack of a better description .Should put a drain hole in the back of the light boxes for drainage and weld the bottoms solid. The rust will run down over the fender. Hey....I had to find something to complain about and it's all I could think of ......Mike
Reply:The bottoms were left open completely for drainage, every time I just leave a drain hole it doesn't seem to be enough. There is a 3/16 gap all the way across, with the light holes open I can get in there to blast/paint the inside and it will never hold water.
Reply:Wow, I was floored when I found some links on acorn style tables. A 5x8 platen sold online for about $6800 w/o shipping.

Reply:No one should question your building a trailer, workmanship is very nice.  I have these type of hubs on my axles, nothing wrong if you know how to set them. 2 types , House trailer are light duty with small bearings and hubs, heavy duty for equipment trailers. don't know which you have. When you put the centerless wheels on put a block next to the tire and spin them to check runout, adust with hammer and use torque wrench on the bolts, no problems.  Watch for bees in those light brackets other than that gotta have LED's LOL> Like the table too."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:That table is the bomb.....I wonder where I can find one for nothin...hmmmmmmmmmm. Oh, awesome genset trailer, although its to bad you dont have a diesal power plant. We used to get about 50  hrs out of a 10 gallon tank on our 10kw generator trailer. That was running 4 or  5 skillsaws and a huge double lung compressor. My 5kw gas genny ran similar load at almost a gallon per hour. That was 20 years ago when gas was cheap. Those were the days......
Reply:I knew as soon as I saw the pic with the acorn table that it would get as many comments as the trailer. (Nice trailer by the way. Looks like you should paint it olive drab, and give it some white markings so that it more closely resembles a tank.) But since that table got so much attention I thought I would point out that on craigslist there's a table in the Monterrey Bay area, two tables actually, for $1250 a piece. I'd call some friends in CA to go pick it up for me if I hadn't just popped for a new (used) welder myself, but that's a good price for a 5X5 from what I've seen.(San Leandro actually. I'm on searchtempest so I'm looking at multiple areas just out of curiosity.)Last edited by macvance; 09-21-2011 at 01:07 AM.Reason: Added the bit about San Leandro
Reply:Nice trailer, but I want to see that tractor.
Reply:Definitely bulletproof and well-designed.  I'd also like to see the completed pics when you get around to it.  And another nod to you for posting your trailer build in the first place.Well done.
