Hi, i'm new to the welding world but would like to learn. I don't know wich mig to buy, I will be using it for my car projects, floor boards and other things that relate to the cars. Thanks for the help.
Reply:Did you do any research at all?Do a search on this site and you will find that this question has been asked and answered many times.
Reply:I have reviews of a couple mid to low-priced migs at the link below, scroll down to the welders section. You have to be realistic in what you want to do with a welder to help choose the one that works for you. As with a lot of other things, once you get started welding you just might want to do much more so your first machine could be just that, the first. I have a whole shop full of power tools that all started with me wanting to get a handheld circular saw like 40 years ago. My tool "needs" have not slowed since!http://www.newmetalworker.com/Reviews/Tom Hintz, publisherwww.newmetalworker.comLincoln Pro Mig 180Lincoln AC 255Determination
Reply:Take a look at some of the threads linked in this sticky.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43760Thats just a small portion of the "which welder should I get" list..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Better still, sign up for a course at a local community college or tech school.  You'll get a feel for different welding processes and machines and you'll get to use them for free.  You'll also learn to make welds that don't surprise you by popping apart when you're driving down the interstate.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:i can offer my opinion, and its just my opinion... i've been building cars, backhalfing them and installing cages over the course of 20 yrs now... you want aleast a 180amp welder and you want infinite controls... you dont want tap type controls... for instance: and this is just from my own experience, generally from what i've experienced, 1/4" is about as thick as you'll use... i use a lincoln 180c, and thats the smallest mig welder i would use, a 200 or 250 amp machine would be best in my opinion... i feel in the world of welders, bigger is better...i had a miller 252a a few years ago, that machine was pretty much perfect for automotive use, a little overkill is good... i also made a few bucks repairing commercial mower trailers for different guys that mowed for a living.. repairing their heavier trailers used to haul tractors on.... generally a person will set a budget for a welder, i can offer this, i wouldnt really do that, buy what you can afford sort of.. you want the best bang for the buck for sure, and honestly i dont feel budget welders are the ticket for what you want to do with it... if i were going to buy a welder, and i were going to do automotive restoration, and planning on keeping the welder for here on out i think i would look at no less than a 180amp machine, i have owned a lincoln 180c for a few yrs now, and its a nice little welder, i do think 180 amp is a little on the light side though, but i got a good price on it,and it had a good feature set... infinite controls, metal drive mechanism, a good warranty, and serviced locally..my next choice would probably be the miller 212 with autoset... you surely want 220volt, the bigger the better... if your going to set a budget i would set one around $750-$1500 and put 2 names on a dart board, lincoln, miller.... 220volt no less than 180amp, and toss the dart..Last edited by brucer; 11-22-2010 at 05:52 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:how much are you looking to spend? if $1000 is in your budget, a miller 211 is a great starting machine, that can grow with you as you want to do mid weight welding with the capability of welding on 110, or 220 input option.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools

Reply:Nothing wrong with ESAB mig masters neither. Buddy just purchased a new Migmaster 203, I had a chance to run it, very impressed.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
