Hey guys here are some welds of mine on .25 a36 plateMiller 211autoset75/25 argon/co244lb spool Hobart .035 wire not sure on the specsAll welds are pushed in with a slight angle Gas flow is set at 20cfm. I have played around with the voltage and wire speed but I keep coming back to the .035-1/4 autoset, it just seems to weld nicely there. These welds have not been cleaned at all.As you can see i gotta work on being more steady, but i would like to see less spatter. what do you guys think?Last edited by lawrence0485; 10-03-2011 at 08:51 PM.

Reply:Hey, Lawrence. That's even better than I thought. I figured it was a mistake!Looks like we have the same truck, but mine is a 1999 model. You should add your address to your profile.Welds look good. Makes me want to get out there and practice more!  Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:Looks good for the weld itself but you need to work on your weld ends..(First and second pic down on the left end as you look at it)That little hole at the end is no good..There is where the trouble starts..Go to the end like you did and when you stop count to 1 and hit it again without moving the gun..then do it again.Build a little tit on top..Other than that ......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Do you really need to lengthen your duty cycle? What is your total arc time per weld?
Reply:Well ideally I'd like to do 19-8" passes back to back in one shot. Right now I can only get about about 12-14 passes before it shuts down and that's from a cold startup. Also that's with the shop temp between 70 and 80. In the summer when its 110-115 in the shop it gets way shorter. I really need a bigger welder but this one is gonna have to do for probably another yr. Right now it takes 3 cycles to get through my 19-20 passes. All in all about 25-30 min weld time. Now before you guys think I'm hating on the mm211, I'm not. I bought the welder with less work load in mind and it was all I could afford at the time.Last edited by lawrence0485; 10-04-2011 at 05:03 PM.
Reply:I know that going with an 80/20 mix will give you a prettier weld, but the trade off is less penetration. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:have you thought about a dualshield wire? more penetration with less power input which would extend duty cycle. I run lincoln's 71m in my 211. at the very least, I would run 100% co2 with that thick of steel.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools

Reply:yes, argon is inert so it does not react, co2 is an active shielding gas, so it gives a hotter weld for the same heat input. the mix of argon and co2 simply reduces the reaction of the co2 with the weld. c25 is generally for thinner steel welding, best suited for 1/8th inch and under, though as you have shown yourself it works on thicker. the limitation is that it is more taxing on the machine, as you have also shown, but it also tends to have less spatter. If I were you I would go pick up a 20lb co2 cylinder which you should be able to get full for under $125 and see the difference. one limitation is that autoset is engineered for use with c25 only, so you will have to dial in the machine yourself. one of the things I like about lincolns 71m is that it can be run with either 100% co2, or c25.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:OK I'm gonna pick up some c02 on Friday and give c02/ Hobart .035 70s6 a try. That Lincoln m71 is flux core right? Could you post some weld pics?
Reply:it is dualshield, it has a flux core, but also uses gas shielding. I don.t have any pics right now, but can probably get some this weekend.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:With regards to the spatter, did you grind off the mill scale from the weld area? When I get spatter like that I normally just up the volts a bit on the feeder and it seems to cure it.Last edited by Baila La Pinza; 10-05-2011 at 01:14 PM.

Reply:Originally Posted by lawrence0485You laugh but I tried ducting a small window unit AC into the air intake of the welder. Didn't really help much. This issue isn't so much the temp of the air blowing through the welder (although it helps), the issue is that the transformer can't shed the heat fast enough. What I don't understand is why they don't add heat sinks to the transformers in these machines.the issue is that the transformer can't shed the heat fast enough. Reply:Just a thought about cooling the transformer down quicker.....They make water coolers for computer chips, so I wonder if that system could be used or modified for this application.Just a thought.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!

Reply:so I was slapping together a cross member for my truck and took a few comparison pics with solid and dual shield wire.first is the joint setup, two pieces of 1/4" steel, no bevel.second pic is with solid .030 wire, power 10, wire speed 100, 100% co2 third pic is lincoln 71m dual shield .035 wire, power 10, wire speed 100, 100% co2, same angle, there is a restart in the middle, A friend inturrupted me during the weld.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
