This afternoon I picked up an UNUSED Phoenix Dry Rod 100W 10lb rod oven for $25. I'm hoping to use it for drying open boxes of 7018 that are sitting on my shelf.  Has anyone used one of these for drying open boxes of rod?  If so, how long would you recommend I heat the rods?  These rods have never gotten wet, they are simply partially used boxes that are sitting in a cool dry place in my shop. Reply:That oven is designed to maintain rods not dry them out. There is a specific temp and time to dry them out  to meet code. The oven you have will not achieve the temp required.
Reply:7018, continuously from the time they come from the factory and the original sealed package is opened. The rod ovens don't get hot enough to rebake 7018.Edit: I type slower than Leightrepairs.  I got a 50# Phoenix for $40. but haven't used it.Last edited by Oldendum; 05-26-2013 at 08:32 PM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:I have that same oven. It is a portable storage oven, pre set temp of 300 degrees. To re treat wet rods, you need over 500 degrees (I believe) of temp. If your rods are just sitting in open boxes and your still using them like that, just toss them in the oven for a day and you should be just fine.I suspect your not doing any code welding at home anyway?Last edited by snoeproe; 05-27-2013 at 08:05 AM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:That oven's real purpose in life is to keep a batch of "already oven stored", or "fresh out of a sealed container" rods close at hand while actually doing a welding operation. It is a neat appliance as the lift up quiver splays the rods out for easy grabbing with gloved hand when raised in the vertical position.I suppose you could use it to dry out rods (instead of the kitchen oven) but if the rods are heavily absorbed, it would require perhaps a week or longer to displace that much moisture using lower temperatures. The difficulty in drying rods out at less than 400-500 degrees is that the flux on the rods really loves water and wants to hold on to it dearly.  It takes a high temp, or a lot of time.........to break the love birds apart.
