I am a rookie welder and have pretty much taught myself how to weld by alot of practicing. Im towards the end of my first smoker build. I have a 220v Hobart Handler 180 mig welder. Rught now i am running .035 flux core out of it with .035 Hobart tips. I clean my steel as good as i can with a wire cup brush and grinder. A lot of the times when i am in the middle of a weld the wire will quit feeding through the tip. The rollers and all in the machine are turning when i hit the trigger but the wire doesnt feed. I do get a good bit of splatter on my tip which i clean off before every bead i put down. Usually i can unscrew the tip and clean it and it will work for a little while , the rest of the day , or until i try to lay another bead. I bought the welder reconditioned. It hadnot been used since getting by from the factory and i have only run 2 spools of 5lb flux core through it. I have read where people use a bigger tip than their wire so the wire feeds through easier....should i do that ? Because i am kinda think the problem is the tip getting gunked up.I also wonder if i have the nut for my wire spool too tight???
Reply:In your owners manual it shows you how to determine the correct pressure on the wire drive rollers.Basically you run the wire out a ways, then against a block of wood (2x4 or such) with the nozzle held close to the wood like you were welding, hit the trigger.  The wire should spool out steadily.  If not, you don't have enough pressure.  If you cannot stop it by running the end of the wire directly into the wood, it's too tight.  Find a happy medium & then you know the roller pressure is ok.Now make sure there are no kinks in the liner.  Sometimes reconditioned machines the liner gets overlooked.  Dirt & crap from the welding can build up & cause it to hang up.  Pay attention to the gun & lead when it jams.  You might have a kink in there somewhere.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I agree that it is probably the liner, pull it out and check it for kinks or if it is overly dirty replace it they are cheap. if it looks fine put it back in and blow some compressed air down it and where it goes into the machine. also are your drive wheels smooth or knurled? fluxcore runs best with knurled drive wheels.
Reply:The wire burning too close to the tip and fusing to it can be a feed problem,it can also be caused by too slow wire feed and long arcing.
Reply:Something many people overlook is the wire guides on either side of the rollers. If the hole through the center is worn into the side, and no longer round replace them. They are also cheap, and are often the problem. But it can be what the other guys where saying tooHickory
