Anyone using a light duty say 500# hoist in their shop? Something like:http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_saca...bx=1&_udhi=410Maybe something for quick pick on the riding mower or other light tasks....Thanks
Reply:Buddy has 3 of the harbor freight ones. He said they work great. As far as 500 pounds go, I'd build heavier. How and what will it be supported from ? Personally, I have I beams with trolley's and chain falls. It depends on what your situation is and what you have to work with. A engine hoist is a asset too.
Reply:I have one something like it. It is what I use to power the travel of the span beam to my bridge crane.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Some day I for sure want a hoist arm off the one upright of my vehicle hoist. Not sure what the single arm type "cranes" are called? I want it to pivot on bearings bolted to the hoist upright, then I want the winch/hoist part to be on rollers so I can roll it back and forth for positioning and so I can pick up heavy parts off motors from cars/trucks, swing them over to the side and put them on a table or whatever.I have a buddy who also picked up one of those HF ones and has had great luck with it for moving his wood working machines around. I built a movable gantry for him so he could position it over a table saw, bandsaw, or whatever, lift it and move it easily.
Reply:I just use my engine hoist. but then again, I don't move much around that I can't do by hand. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Yeah I have an engine hoist I made 20 years ago out of 4x4 and 3.5x3.5 tubing. Takes up a lot of space in my small shop so it sits out side and rusts. Can't buy one this heavy duty, but you also can't pass up on the fold up jobs for light duty work for less than $200.I'm keeping an eye out for a an electric hoist, frees up floor space.
Reply:I use a "cherry picker" engine hoist that's rated for 2,500lbs.  I use it to get heavy items in/out of my Silverado truck bed.  Works great and I got it off CL for $100.00.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Looks like chain hoists are MUCH more $$ than the cable ones....

Reply:Originally Posted by VPTThat is what I use for everything right now as well. But when working on vehicles it does get in the way when just using it to lift or lower heads or intakes on motors in vehicles. Plus the controls are a ways away from the motor. With an electric overhead I would still have all my room to work plus a remote up and down control so I don't have to leave the engine bay.
Reply:I use an old 1 ton York chain hoist. Very reliable, very smooth.
Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcI've considered on taking my cherry picker and actually moding it with a small 120v AC winch.  By utilizing pulleys and such, that way I could bypass the cranking of the hydraulic jack on it.  I saw a mod like that on another website and it gave me a great idea.  Just some brackets welded to the frame to hold the winch and some pulley wheels for the cable.   Would be a very easy mod to make, just gotta buy the winch.  Warn Winch makes a very cool 2000lb portable winch that I could use.  Even an ATV winch would be perfect.
Reply:ML250K-2C10-C6 Ingersoll Rand Air Hoist was setting in a pawn shop for over a year priced at $750. The owner walked by while I was looking and drooling. I asked what the price was today, he said $300. Sold, but it need to be repaired that cost $161. Now I have a $3,500 to $2,700 air hoist. Installed Windows 8 and have not learned how to load pictures yet.
