Has anyone tig welded Brass?Did a bit of a search here and didn't find anything , maybe I'm just dumb .A lady wants a coffee table  ....brass , it has to be Brass!I can get 1" square tube , the section she wants but only 1.22mm wall (18 gauge).I can braze but I'm no gun at it at all. Aesthetics of weld important and with that thin wall I'm thinking Tig.I'm guessing 100% Ar, DCEN ,a 3/32 or 1/16 Thoriated electrode , amps to suit wetting the puddle?Have used similar on annealed copper to plug a hole in some tube (filled the hole but no show piece   )Any imput from experience appreciated , the sections aren't cheap so Id rather have some input before buying lengths and experimenting Thanks BrettA good guess is better than a bad measurement

Reply:Ive welded lots of brass square tubeing . You must have rod sheared or cut from the same brass to get a color match. If it smokes at all it means that you have gotten it to hot and burned the zinc out of the brass.  It welds really cool . I welded this brass with it clamped down on a felt lying on a table. It was all pre polished 3/4 by .060. I was making decretive furniture for the May store in LA.  These pieces were all cut very accurately and all the welds were on inside and bottom corners, so they did not have to be refinished.I would say practice a lot on cold material. Reply:the zinc and lead content of the brass is going to make it crack prone also you are going to have to use proper ppe for the zinc and lead fumes it can be done with sibronze also like said above shear pieces of to match color You can improve your chances of success in welding free machining metals in a few ways. The first would be to use filler so you get dilution of the base metal in the weld zone and heat input should be kept as low as possible. Joint restraint should be used to reduce cracking. The weld joints shouldn’t be highly stressed. Brazing and soldering of some alloys with some fillers is possible to also improve your chances of success.which grade of brass do you plan on using ?Miller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]

Reply:I can not remember all the settings.  that was 45 years ago. I do believe it was DC though. There were not as many settings back then as now. Mac

Reply:I agree that AC may be best because of the zinc. Don't use silicon bronze if there is more than a trace of lead- lead and silicon do not play well together. Just ask your supplier for a grade of filler that's as close to 70/30 as possible.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:I welded some thick brass. I used ac balance set to minimal cleaning, 90hz frequency and 240 amps with 2,4mm thoriated tungsten. I used normal silicon bronze filler rods. When brass gets hot it welds great.
Reply:Here's a thread by Power that he started yesterday welding projects and picture section. He TIG welded a brass pan.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=279781Maybe it will give you some inspiration.
