Reply:Acetylene is always around 7 psi.  Oxygen pressures depend on the tip.  A size 0 tip typically uses 35 psi and it goes up from there.  5 psi per tip size is an acceptable rule of thumb.  The acetylene tank valve is usually cracked open.  O2 tank valve is opened fully and back seated.  On the torch, open the oxygen valve at the hose connection fully.  Open the acetylene and light the torch.  Open the acetylene until the flame breaks away from the tip then close unil it comes back to the tip.  Open the second oxygen valve on the cutting attachment until you've extablished a neutral flame.  The inner cone will get be shortest at the neutral flame setting.  Preheat and make your cut.
Reply:You really should get back with the instructor and go over some of the basics again. Which bottle is which is a long way from striking up a flame. Here's some reading tho. http://www.esabna.com/EUWeb/OXY_handbook/589oxy1_1.htm"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:thank you 76. sandy no way im not going to ask the instructor. he will make a big deal about it over a small question.
Reply:Wow, Just wow. I don't know what else to say other then please stay away from O/A until you learn and remember which is which. You get what you put in and people get what they deserve...
Reply:You assume that he means to CUT when in fact he may mean to WELD.Still want him to "open the oxygen valve at the hose connection fully. Open the acetylene and light the torch."Obvious to you and me, but maybe not to the OP.Later,Jason
Reply:no i mean to actually cut the medal up.
Reply:i know whats the difference from oaw cutting and welding. there is a huge difference.
Reply:If the instructor makes a "big deal" you need a new instructor. The only stupid question is the one that is not asked and gets someone hurt.
Reply:lol its not like i can fire him and tell him to get out. thats true. but he says well ask someone else. i cant when everyone else is in there booth,

Reply:Find out what brand torch it is then look up the instructions on line. In the instructions they will have a chart that will list what pressures for what size tips. Fuel cylinders should not be opened more then one full turn and oxy should be opened all the way.
Reply:Of all things to not ask someone for a second to refresh your memory this is probably the worst, I know how to do it and still don't want to, acetylene and oxygen might be some of the most dangerous welding equipment ever, and it would seriously only take someone asecond to remind you how
Reply:sounds like your instructor should be kicked in the balls and fired, in that order. if he tells you toask someone else tell him thats why he is being overpaid.
Reply:Oxygen hose is green, fuel hose (acet) is red.  The fuel fittings are reverse threaded to avoid accidentally connecting fuel/oxygen to the wrong connectors. Most of my cutting (using a victor setup) is at 3-5psi acet, around 20psi oxy.You really should take a few minutes to read at least the manufacturer's instruction book for your setup.  The result of a mistake here could be expensive and/or injurious.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:Oh... What the hell !!!   At least the kids not a video geek.  Appears to be learning  (or trying to learn) a blue collar trade. Can't knock him for that now days.

Reply:It may help if you make your location visible.  If you're in another country, the tank/hose colors may be different.Ohh, and I'd fire the instructor then kick him in the head.  Any brain damage it would cause him obviously wouldn't be a loss.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow

Reply:I just hope you know which gas you  D O N T set at 35 psi. You cant spell "metal".You dont know which bottle is which.Youre in welding. Please set the torch down, before anyone gets hurt. This stuff is dangerous, and believe me, youre alot better off swallowing your pride and asking your instructor a question like this. The "big deal" he will make of it pales in comparison to the "big deal" everyone will make of you getting blown up or killing someone.X3 on getting a new instructor. The first thing we learned at my school was oxy welding, and before we even picked up a torch, we knew about the gases, the equipment, how to use them safely, and even what to do in the case of a fire or a burn. We all had everything memorized, and knew it by heart. We had passed tests and our instructor encouraged questions. Please be careful.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Read up on the subject THOROUGHLY, then read it again, then read about it for relaxation when not studying for an actual assignment. DO post more questions, because the only dumb question is one you don't ask. Since there is plenty of free welding info on the internet you can pick up MUCH more than the minimum they teach in weak vo-techs. If the instructor is actually a problem, critique his practices in specific detail after you are done with the class (so you don't get screwed over on your grade)

Reply:Sounds like another poor welding instructor wasting your money and time. That isnt the first time i have herd that.Ya gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:You need to find out who the dean is and go tell him about your experience as one of his customers. If he is of no help then you are truly at the wrong school.Good luckMy instructor is like that too, because he wants us working as a team. It's not because he's a dick who is a terrible teacher. The way I see it, you should have the nuts to ask the question. Who cares if it's embarrassing? How many lives are at risk if you screw up? The answer should be at least the number of people in the shop. One time my teacher asked me to set up the bottle. Instead of fumbling with it, I said "I don't know how."He said, "You what? You don't know HOW?""Nope," I said, "we read it in the book, but I learn by doing. So I need you to show me before I am willing to go mess with thousands of PSI of oxygen"He asked the class if anyone knew how to set up the bottles. He was kind of annoyed, but when everyone said they didn't, he took a good 45 minutes to go over bottle safety. Everyone got a chance to install and remove regulators, clear the necks of debris, check for leaks in hoses/regulator/torch, light up a flame, roll the bottles around the shop, and load and unload them from the cart.Moral of the story is, embarrassment lasts a few seconds, hurting someone can last a lifetime. On top of that, there is usually at least one other person in the class who is too scared to ask the question.
