Hi everyone, im doing a project now and i have some question with chrome plated sheet metal, i have never worked with chrome plated pieces. The pieces will be made out of 1/32 X 3'' X 24'' long, those sheets metal pieces are made of steel and will be sent to the plating companie, my probleme is those sheet have to be a little curved by hands to make some radius not accurate radius (for decorative end on a ceiling) and because it will be a kind of ''artisanal'' job and we can't really calculate anything in the shop and make those curved and radius before shipping it to the plating companie. So my plan is to send them for chrome plating as straight sheet lenght 1/32 X 3'' X 24'' longand doing the curve and radius job by hand directly on the field with the chrome plated sheets. My probleme is im really scared if the chrome plated can cracked if i try to pry it a little, is the chrome coating is like a solid coat on the steel and can cracked if bended ? As the same as the galvanized can ''peel'' if you bend a galvanized plate. Also considering that i won't be rolling it with tight radius in a machine or bending it in a brake, juste a little by hand.Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:The chrome plater is going to put a fair amount of heat into your metal during the polishing process. You'll likely see warping of the metal. Start out with cold roll steel sheet as opposed to HR. I'd say put your radius in prior to plating it. Or do one with and without and have the plater to a test.
Reply:Bend your pieces first before any decorative plating. Chrome is not very ductile at all. It's a very hard surface metal that will crack when bent.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller 625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Thanks for telling me extra comments as ''bad plan'' i know that is a ''bad plan'' i was looking for a solution.I won't take any chance and doing it mirror finnish with SSCalculator > Bevel Square
Reply:do it right the first time then have it chromed. Even if this means fabbing it on site then removing it to get plated then re installing. There are no solutions other than that one.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Am no custom sheet metal expert. But still think you are better of getting radius job done first and chrome plating after. Your call !!!
Reply:If possible - build it in stainless and then polish , would save time and about break even on cost. Plus you can start and finish the job without waiting on third party work being completed. |
