This is a BBQ/Smoker I'm building for a neighbor. He has an old Shorthood and several pieces of large used oilfield pipe, so I'm in the process of teaching him to weld. It's been a slow process because the gastank is coming apart from the inside and the carb stays dirty! Reply:I couldn't figure out how to explain between photos, so we'll do it this way. The first photo is jack stands I built to handle large dia. pipe. The BBQ side is 22" dia. x 54"long and the fire box is 19" dia. x 36" long. The flat plate on top of the fire box is 1/2" as is the end plate between the fire box and BBQ. There is a baffle with a swedge cut out of the top 3" from the endplate (or separator?) and the same swedge is cut in the 1/2" endplate at the bottom. That way the smoke has to make a serious "bend" to enter the BBQ/Smoker side w/o letting in a lot of the heat. He wanted a "Western Theme", so the door on the fire box and the door on the end of the BBQ/Smoker have six pointed US Marshall star, the handles on the BBQ doors are horse shoes w/axe handles (hickory) and the hinges are some rough spurs made of 1/4" plate. When it's finished there will be more of the western theme, but I'll not give it away yet. The bottom of the fire box and BBQ/Smoker also have a sliding air vent built into them as this is the key to controlling heat, smoke, etc. There is still a long way to go before it is finished, it's awful heavy, so we will mount it on a tandem axle trailer. He wants an awning built over the top of the trailer and coolers, etc. built in too. So you can see this is just a good start. Hope you like it, I've liked most of what I've seen here, so thought I'd throw in a bone of my own! Reply:That is quite a rig and you certainly achieved the western look. The spur hinges are great as are the horseshoe handles.
Reply:awesome job... could you go into more detail about the spurs? I am thinking of making a smoker soon and those would fit the bill perfectly. Thanks!Fluffy
Reply:Gizz,That is probably more folk art than anything.  But the best thing about it is that it looks like it will actually work.  Is that thing going to fit into a portable BBQ shack?Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:Very Cool. I will be stealing many ideas from you.
Reply:Thanks for the flowers guys..you too Fluffy??   Lugweld, Folk Art is kinda' pushin' the envelope idn't it? Anyway, it will work as I have built seveeral of these, just not as elaborate. They work very well. I guess you could call it a portable BBQ shack, if you wanted to, a party barge...Fluffy, I don't really know how to go into detail about the spurs. They are cut from 1/4" mild steel plate. Heated and shaped around a piece of 2 3/8" pipe, polished a little with a flap disc...requires patience is all. We used to make real spurs as govt. jobs  at a local jobsite here from stainless, they weren't as heavy duty as these are tho, as they didn't have a lot of weight to support. These do, hence the 1/4" plate. Reply:I like the spurs. Great door hinges. I might have to borrow this idea.Last edited by ToolBoxTavern; 10-26-2011 at 07:40 AM.We are on our way to being farmers! Our site is always under construction so check back often for updates.  http://www.philosophyfarmstyle.com/
Reply:This is one of the nicer smokers I've seen on here, very well thought out and lots of detail work already done. I'm wondering how the air vent at the bottom of the fire box holds up to use; does it get hard to slide from ashes and rust or is it not a problem?HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X

The handle used to open & close the vents has enough leverage that there hasn't been a serious problem. When it stiffens up a little, or gets a stubborn piece of charcoal in it, working it back & forth a few times loosens it up nicely.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:Your artistic genius is very evident!! However, I blame Duanne for sucking me into the topic of steel smokers. Yes, I have a project in the oven... Hi Duanne! But, I found a very handy calculator for designing horizontal offset smokers. Someone has put together this little program which offers suggestions for sizing components that should work well together.http://www.feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.htmlCity of L.A. Reply:Originally Posted by gizzardgutzThe smoke stacks hod the lids open on finished product. The end is capped with 1/4" plate. I cut the end caps to fit the ID of the pipe and got a good fillet weld and ground it smooth.
Reply:This being heavy wall pipe, it got sandblasted & hand rubbed with lard before building a very large, hot, long lasting fire. Sort of like seasoning cast iron cookware. This way it will never require paint either, when small spots of rust show up, wire brush area, rub lard on it & cook brisket, or turkey, or pork butt.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
