Reply:So  i am assuming that being able to weld on pressure pipe is difficult. So how do I learn?
Reply:I am sure that you will have to do a pipe test 6G, Depending on the job you could be tig, mig, or stick welding. Your best bet is to contact a potential employer and simply ask what there cert tests are and practice untill you feel comfortable.Mainly Mechanical Contractors work on plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, therefore any type of welding that goes hand in hand with that would need to be focused on."My fingernails are melting"

Reply:Hello I have been a structural steel welder/aluminum fabricator (Bar joist decking ETC) for 12 years I can tig weld aluminum very fine and overhead stick weld 7018 also with little difficulty But I have never been certified was trained by my father and have only work in this industry for him Its time for a change and I am looking for a pipe fitters job. where can i get certified and take a 6G test in the Dallas Texas areaThanks for your help I realy need it.Needless to say my father does not agree with my decision and has pretty much disowned me so practicing at the shop is out of the question. Its time for me to move on been under his wing my hole life.Anthony E R.

Reply:Good point Sundown. I've been on many jobs and never presented or been asked about my certs. Most of the folks I've worked with have not been. Here's what I've learned so far, not an expert by any means but have really paid attention to this stuff. 1" plate 3G, 4G will get you unlimited structural,AWS D1.1 if that is what you test to, will also let you weld pipe(structural) not sure on the size though, something like up to 24" or over 24", not exactly sure on that one. You also have others, I've heard D1.3, also bridge is different somehow, which is another test. If you plan on doing decking, I've heard that does not fall under D1.1 which means your certs would be useless in that application. API 1104 oil/gas pipe, is Downhill welding. If you do a 5G on a 6" piece of pipe, you are qualified to weld a 6" piece of pipe down to 2". You'll need the pipe notch, tensile and bend tested to be qualified for high pressure. If you plan to weld on pipe less than 2" you need to take the test on 1.5" or 1" pipe, same applies, tensile test coupons. To be Unlimited on Downhill pipe you'll have to do a 12" x .250" wall butt weld. This will get you up to 48" and down to 2", but then you have to factor in the "X" number of the pipe, X42, X52 and up. If you test on X52 then you can only weld X52 or less(X42), same with the wall thickness, .250" or less. Nothing bigger unless you test for it. Now when you start talking 6G and 6GR(ASME) your talking about boiler/steam, process piping(?) and that is uphill welding. Typically 6010 root pass, hot/fill 7018 but most has become Tig the root and hot/fill 7018 or Tig all the way out. When you get into testing for 6G I have heard it called, "a money pit" when it comes to certifications. I don't think taking a test 6G or 6GR will "prequalify" you for "ALL", under ASME code maybe but 6G/6GR will not qualify you for AWS or API code. If you test on a 6" schedule 120 pipe under ASME I'm not thinking that will prequalify you or make you unlimited. I'm not real up on the ASME stuff but sure it will be like the API above. When I talked to the guys at the lab about ASME it was mind boggling. Besides, you get your own papers and when you get to a job they'll most likely test you anyhow, so your papers won't mean squat. If you have a business then having your own papers as I do will be beneficial because you may be out on a job and get asked. What you'll find is there is not "ONE" test that will encompass all certifications. Having your own papers will be good in some folks eyes and a waste of your time in other folks eyes. Some like papers cause that shows you've passed before unlike the fella without papers. Others don't care cause they're gonna test you their way. Either way, you'll be tested.Last edited by klbwelding71; 08-03-2009 at 07:54 AM.aka Cumminsguy71 at other forums....would not work here??

Reply:In California the standard test we take for oilfield jobs is the 6G , 6010 on root & hot pass, 7018 the rest ....2" schedule 160 .
