Hello all,I've been lurking for a while and finally got my super cheap-o Chinese wire feed flux core welder to dink around on until I wind up needing an upgrade. My only real welding experience is a one semester class I took years ago and after watching many, many of Jody's WeldingTipsAndTricks videos [hell, a lot of ChuckE2009's as well] I'm finally ready to practice and then construct the custom desk frame I've wanted to build for years. So - where should I get metal from? The dude I spoke to at Home Depot looked at me as if I were a dog that suddenly spoke, and while Lowes actually did have a selection of materials I'd imagine their prices aren't really all that good - especially since I'd like just some scrap to practice on so I don't butcher the welds on my upcoming desk frame.I do remember loving the welding class and can see fabricating things becoming addicting. Hopefully I'll outgrow this little welder quickly. [Oddly enough, my favorite process in the welding class I took was actually TIG, I took to that the easiest out of all of them - although courtesy of Jody's videos I now know the MIG I was working with was set totally wrong for what I was doing]Thanks in advance!-Sootah

Reply:Metal Mart in Lehi is the place to goGive me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
Reply:Good suggestions, I'll have to give them a try. Thanks!
Reply:for practice, pick from their "usable" pile outside that they sell by the pound. It's rusty, but you need to be in the habit of grinding down to clean metal anyway...MillerMatic 252, HTP 221 w/cooler, Hypertherm PM45, Lincoln IdealArc 250 AC/DC"I'd like to believe as many true things and as few false things as possible"
Reply:We order all our steel in western colorado from a place in Spanish fork called pdm they deliver next day but you might need a commercial address for that
Reply:Actually, there are a couple projects I want to work on with my brother-in-law in Price, and Spanish Fork is right on the route there. I'll have to check them out as well. Thanks again!
Reply:Here you go if you need to buy specific material for a project. I believe they also have drops for practicing on.http://wasatchsteel.com/
Reply:Little bit of an old thread, but I like triple s steel in salt lake. Big showroom, great selection of remnants stored inside, so they aren't all rusted to hell. guys there are nice, and priced and hot and cold rolled stuff is in line with the other 5 places I checked.
Reply:Triple S is the place to go for steel. Neither Wasatch or Metal Mart can touch their remnants section. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

Reply:Whenever I went to Ogden, we would goto Smith&edwards. They had a big army tank out front and lots of surplus scrap. I don't know if they carry scrap anymore thoughI stay out of Utah tho. They are some lousy drivers.Last edited by Insaneride; 06-18-2013 at 05:49 PM.Reason: Lousy drivers
Reply:I love smith and Edwards but I haven't seen much scrap. Although I've never left the store to wander outside. Maybe I'm missing out. Do we have a utah peeps thread? Also, I may need to check this bush wick metals place out..... |
