I applied for a job in Antarctica today. Was wondering if any of you guys have done this kind of work or know someone who has.. just trying to get some insight on a job of this caliber. Thanks guys...
Reply:thats awesome, i would love to head out there to do some welding..what kind of welding job is it?   you going to be with others, or by yourself?
Reply:It sounds like me and mybe 2 other welders. Its mainly repair and maintenance. For the science exploration team.
Reply:thats cool. well i wish you luck, hopefully you get the job..   how long will you be out there?   if you get the job, take pics.. i would love to go just to see what its like out there..
Reply:From what I have learned looking into a polar job up north you will have to go through a physical as well as a dental exam and a psych evaluation.  Extreme cold and isolation and nothing but white will be a constant and any of these can have an effect on your health and mental state.  You'll be eating large amounts of calories on the order of around 5k a day just like crabbers do to stay warm.  Google sub zero welding issues to get an idea of what you will be facing in having to prep any jobs that can't be brought into a workshop, my father told me that when he was on a transfer layover at a base north of the arctic circle that metal parts on the jeeps and 6x6's would simply snap from stress and cold.  Oh and the dental exam is to see if your teeth are in good enough health that you will not have the potential for any issues requiring a root canal or cavity filled.  Also what ever you do never ever breath through your open mouth with your front teeth exposed while outside in temps -10F and lower because they can freeze almost instantly on an inhale and crack.  Be careful about breathing heavily through your nose if its not covered, the nasal passages just inside can get frost bit, this happened to me a few years back working in -30F temps in a cold storage facility.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.
Reply:I applied for an Antarctic job last year, but as a plant operator not a welder. I made the short list but was rejected on medical grounds due to a VERY minor medical condition, if your not 100% perfectly healthy it's tough to get a look in.It would have been a great opportunity, about 60 grand for a six month stint and getting to go to a place I would pay serious money to visit.Best of luck.Cheers Andrew
