I would post a pic but iPad doesn't support flash. €¥##%!!I have a part made of 1/4" mild steel rod and I want to electrically isolate one end of the rod from the other but still have it as essentially one piece.I was thinking about cutting the rod, threading the cut ends male and then drilling a nylon rod female for the ends to thread in.  But....is there a better method, or material?
Reply:That all depends on how strong you need the rod to be, and what forces you expect it to hold.
Reply:As rlitman said depends on strength. That said Delrin is pretty strong, takes machining and threading well and is not conductive. You could you fab a Delrin coupler between the two ends. Or better yet just use a Delrin rod. Delrin is stronger than nylon. Another material with a high diaelectic is phenolic machines well used for bushings used to use it in power transformers as an isolator, again machines well and is strong.

Reply:[QUOTE=heimbuckwelding;580440]how about UHMW pices stands up to heat[/QI once made an "insulator" for an electrical test fixture out of UHMW.Drawing called for nylon, but I found a piece of "gray plastic" that was almost theright size. Guys in the electronics lab were going nuts trying to make test fixture work.Turns out that the UHMW material was conductive.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:really hmmm how bad does it  conduct electricity? ive uses it as an insulator before for my lead reels and have not seemed to have a problem wonder if there are diff kinds or grades of UHMW maby i need to switch gears and use something different from now onLincoln Pro Core 125Lincolin sp 100Miller Big 40Lincoln Idealarc SP250miller matic 212http://www.facebook.com/hdwelding?sk=wallwww.hdweldingbeds.com
Reply:Since your hose reel insulators haven't shorted/melted,I guess there are either very different types of UHMW ,or resistance is high enough that the conductivityis only  a problem with sensitive electronics.I just did a quick google search and one source states that carbon black, carbon fibers or metalic powders are sometimes added. It seems that because material is often used as a low friction bearing surface, conductivity is useful to eliminate static.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:You would try a plastics supplier for some phenolic board or block.  I know Lincoln handles it for their submerged arc custom setups but it is way too expensive.  That is why I suggest a local plastics house might be able to supply you.   If you need a rod consider sleeving it with plastic.  Phenolic is thermosetting plastic.  It does not melt with heat like thermoplastics.
Reply:San Diego Plastics has a very good selection of Phenolic and plastics. Here is a link: http://www.sdplastics.com/Down side is if your ordering there is a min order. If your local you could walk over and pick up what your looking for a couple of bucks in their scrap shelf. The site is excellent though, lots of information on plastic, engineering data etc.
