on the welding truck the welder needs a new battery,Is there any battery any of you thinks best? The welder is Lincoln ranger.Second question,  any one extend a wire from the trucks battery to start the welder?good idea or not to use the trucks battery, for the welder? If I am figuring correctly the cost of the wire would be less than a cheap lawn tractor battery and was thinking of putting a 100 amp circuit breaker in line on the line to the welder,
Reply:I have had the welder hooked up on same battery . Dont remember any problems. One thing about it you can usually crank the older welders by hand if need be. Not sure about newer ones .  Go for it and then you will be more experienced.
Reply:After doing a small amount of research, it sounds like what you are asking for is a starter battery for the engine of your welder.  I imagine that hooking up a line from the trucks battery to the welder may work, I'd have the truck running while doing this.If you are looking for a great replacement, look into an a123 pack.
Reply:Would actually be a good way to start the welder.  The Ranger I have is the pits to change batteries on, at least the way I have mine mounted on the skid.  I have to lift the welder out of the cradle to get to the battery compartmentIt would be interesting, if anybody would know, to see how the charging system on the welder would be affected without the welder battery hooked into the system.  The charging system on the welder is responsible for supplying the spark for the welder's ignition system, and would have to operate while the motor is running.  I suppose it would just charge the truck battery   The truck battery would have to stay in the circuit while the welder is running I suppose.  I'm not real big on electrical stuff."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I have an old Lincoln, I believe its a Weldanpower 9000G..........bought it new about 15 years ago and really hardly ever use it, I think there is only about 50 hours on it in all these years.......anyway, ever time I do try to use it, I have to buy a battery for it.  Fast forward to around 2005, I bought a new battery for it and the guy at the parts house suggested also buying a solar battery maintainer hootis and leaving it hooked up.  I did that and now every time I want to use the machine it actually starts and I havent had to buy a battery for 10 years..........best 30 buck I ever spent.  Now everytime I need a new battery for a tractor, ATV......anything, I also buy another solar charger.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:Just get a 29.99 lawn and garden battery, they last a good 5-10 years if you run the welder regularly.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I can only keep four garden tractor batteries alive at one time and I have had the best luck with the house brand ones from Advanced Auto Parts
Reply:Go ahead and try it! worst case scenario, your out some money for cable and a little bit of time. You should only need to run one wire for the hot side and connect the ground to a good spot on the truck frame, or run it back to the negative if you have grounding problems. You could also more than likely hook a disconnect in line and also run a battery in the welder, you can get automatic isolators that will prevent one battery from parasitically draining the other. It would let your truck alternator keep the welders battery charged properly anytime the truck is running.
Reply:Forget about adding a "100 amp breaker" to the battery cable from the truck battery. No real need for it if you route the cable properly away from objects that could cut or chafe the cable.Besides, unless the welder engine is less than around 16-18 horsepower, the current draw of the starter motor may exceed 100 amps, especially on a cold start in winter. To forestall ANY potential problems that might exist concerning the GROUND (Battery negative) portion of your new arrangement for cranking the welder, go ahead and run a ground cable from the welder engine block down to the truck frame (not to the truck BED).You should uses cables at least 1 AWG size LARGER than the AWG size of the cable that came OEM with the welder starter circuits.  This will more than compensate for the fractional voltage drop caused by the extra length of the new starter power circuit.
Reply:Thank you ever one, for your responses,my experience with lawn tractor batteries is about 18 months MAX. and that is on a 16 HP mower that is used all year round for either mowing or feeding cattle or other things,  (what I am saying is it runs often, the engine is a Onan  18 HP if I remember correctly.  yes my main concern was the alternator on the welder being bother by the trucks charging system.I talked to my son about this and he has worked on a number of crews and welding shops,  some doing field work and so on, and he had never see or hear of any one doing this, and we wondered if there was a negative aspect to doing this? since it seems like a logical idea,he talked about the one crew of millwrights he worked with always fighting dead or down batteries on there welders. but the trucks were fine and would start and run., and how they would hook up one welder to another (some how) to get it started.

Reply:positive of one machine to the negative of the other machine, and vica versa............turns your generator into a motor.........works well6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:Regarding the "battery charging alternator" of the welder engine affecting the truck charging system...................so long as both the truck and the welder battery systems operate as 12 volt, negative ground.............there will be no problems with them "sharing a battery".  And there is no need to leave the truck engine running either.Whatever charge is drawn out of the truck battery when cranking the welder, will be put back by the alternator on the welder engine while it is running.
