Can this flowmeter be used for tig? Did some searching on the web and it seems it outputs at 80 psi? Isn't that too much for tig or mig? Thought 25 psi is the norm. Thanks guys.
Reply:Hey 2rods,You are going to have to learn the differences between PSI & CFH. All regulators have (2) gauges(dial or dial/balltube) to indicate tank pressure(PSI) & output(CFH). That flow meter will register output in CFH. TIG & MIG flowrate settings will vary from 12-15 cfh indoors to 18-22cfh outdoors(<5mph wind).DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:I know the difference. Some are at 25 and this one is at 80. If you put a gauge on the end of the hose I think you will still read pressure no matter what the CFH is.

Reply:50 psi and 30 psi seem like the most common internal regulated pressures for TIG argon/helium flow meters.  80 psi is rather high.I'd tend towards recommending the 30 psi over the 50psi (or anything higher), because the higher the pressure, the more the argon will be wasted every time the TIG machine's solenoid opens.That is because when the solenoid closes, the argon keeps flowing through the flowmeter, until the hose connecting flowmeter to solenoid is filled to the flowmeter's internally regulated pressure.  The when the solenoid opens, this excess gas stored between flowmeter and solenoid suddenly gets released ("Whoooosh!!!") past the solenoid and out the TIG cup.  It not only is a waste of gas, but the excessive turbulent flow can cause erratic arc starts (and arc burns on your metal) unless the pre-flow is set long enough to allow the excess flow to stabilize before the arc is initiated.

Reply:http://www.netwelding.com/ has a good explanation.I asked them about why it has to be so high and was told to overcome obstacles in the flow path should anything reduce output.Regulator flow is calibrated to pressure with proper diameter orfice plate, the only way to get right.So I would not worry to much on a tig rig about the pressure.You can buy supply hoses with secondary orfices in them also to help save gas.
Reply:The Victor 2480 is the exact same as the 2400. The only difference is the flow tube. But It is the same except for the markings. The 2400 series has an adjustment screw on the bottom under the acorn nut that can be adjusted with an hex head. It is very easy to do. If my memory is correct run the hex out for less pressure. Simply screw a gauge into the discharge and set to the desired pressure. No need to change any parts. Don't for get that you are setting static pressure. So no gas should be flowing. Or you can use it worth out changing the preset pressure. The disadvantage of 80 PSI is you will use more gas. You may notice a larger blast of gas when every time you pull the trigger. You can save a little gas by shortening the line running from the regulator to the welder. The 2400 series is a very high quality regulator.Last edited by Greg Tracker; 01-31-2011 at 07:38 PM.
