I know there are many many types of steel.....Chromium Stainless, Nickel-Chromium, Manganese, Molybdenum, High Temperature, Carbon.....and many more. What would be the right type (specifically) for this. I live in Houston so I have a pretty large variety to choose from.
Reply:A full on race cart. Chromoly. A fun kart. Regular oldMild steel like 1018. Design will be more important than the materialHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:Molybdenum is not a type of steel. As well as many other elements you posted. They are just that. Elements used to compose a steel alloy.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:Briggs, What type of welding are you planning of using? Alot of the materials you have listed require tig and or gas welding. Will you be using box or round? If you have a bender and can bend and cope tubing and tig or gas weld I would look into Chrome Moly 4130 it is used widely in the motorsports world. Budget in mind mild steel may work great in your application as well. Dale
Reply:Thanks guys I am gonna use a mig welder (HOBART 187 120 volt).

Reply:Still haven't specified the type of kart. I'm assuming just a fun low power cart. So definitely I would just stick with mild steel.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:Mild steel... 4130 is only necessary if weight and rigidity are a concern.
Reply:DOM drawn over mandrale tubing is what I use for any kind of frame.
Reply:I have built a couple motorized toys out of regular mild steel. Believe me it can handle alot of abuse. Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:I'm actually just finishing up a kart.  I used 1x1 .120 mild steel and it's plenty heavy duty for a go kart.  I should have gone with 14 gauge.Last edited by UglyWelds; 12-02-2011 at 09:51 AM.Reason: spelling
Reply:I used 1.125 .120 wall DOM tubing for my bike. It'll more than do a go kart. Make sure you use TUBE and not PIPE.
Reply:X how many ever on mild steel. Built one for my 9-year-old nephew last year for Xmas. Even with the $155 5.5 HP Chinese knockoff engine and 13 tooth clutch, that thing screams and has taken a beating. A little dinged up, but runs like a champ and the frame is soild.Miller Dynasty 200DXMillermatic 210 w/ Spoolmate 3035Hypertherm Powermax 380JD Squared Model 32Multiple fabrication tools & equipmentFull Powder Coating Setup
