I read this forum everyday, comment when I think I have something to add if it hasn't already been stated, and have learned a lot from all of you.  With that in mind I thought it fitting that I share a personal milestone with you all.  Found out today that I passed my CWI exam! Took the test about 3 weeks ago along with the seminar.  I felt confidant before attending the seminar on the fundamentals portion, the practical I felt ok about, but the code was pretty daunting.  The seminar reinforced my confidence on fundamentals, I felt real good about the practical, and the code book was much easier to digest after we were shown how to tab and navigate it.  I don't know my actual score yet (I just received an email today from AWS that I passed), but I should get them in the mail soon.  No one walks away from that test saying "I nailed it!", after that test you feel thoroughly examined.  Actually testing time was 6 hours, but was there a total of 9 including the breaks, etc.   I highly recommend the seminar.  If you take it in another city, leave the wife and kids at home!   There were 8-12 hour day in class, and then a MINUMUM of 4 hours of studying on your own.  It's a full immersion and you have to eat, drink, sleep, deficate this stuff.Again, just thought I would share and say thanks for keeping welding interesting.  This field is so broad that I will be learning the rest of my life...what a challenge!Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (

Reply:Good job. I passed mine last year. Rich Depue was my AWS instructor and he did an excellent job. I know what you mean about tabbing the codebook. Take out all the metric BS and it's cut in half. I took mine for my existing job so I didn't have all the excitement you have about starting a new career. I must admit I'm a little jealous. Any ideas about where you'll try to work?
Reply:Thanks again everyone.  I took the seminar with David Diaz in Sacramento, and he was also great.  Kept it humorous and as exciting as possible.  I got my scores back.  I got a 94 percent overall, 91 on fundamentals, 96 on the practical, and a 96 on the code.  I did not go into the seminar cold so that helped alot.  I also got my welding contractors lic over the summer.  I don't ever want to move away from welding completely but I hope to expand the business opportunities into inspection, qualifications, and procedures while stil contracting.  Trying not to have all my eggs in one basket. On another exciting note I start as a parttime welding instructor at the local junior college next semester.Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (
Reply:Most guys fail the first time,i failed twice on api 1104,,there are 3 variations of each test,,i was in a semenar with over 100 guys for 10 days, most would beleive AWS is a money racket, part b is normally the hardest but when i took codebook the 2nd go round it all came out of appendix a and b,,in service welding and we spent little time in seminar navigating the back of the codebook
Reply:Why would you waste time with D1.1,,are you a bridge inspector,,API 1104 is far broader and supercedes the prior,,congrats anyway though!!
