Hey all.  Would you please recommend a good book on the history of arc (stick) welding?  I'm just getting into it, and I would really like to read all about the rich history on the earliest continuous electric arc welding method or whatever it's referred to. (I'll also try the AWS website.) - Cheers!Agape GuyEverlast Power I-MIG 200 (dual voltage)Everlast PowerArc 200 stickHarbor Freight Titanium 125 Easy FluxHypertherm Powermax 30Way too many power tools
Reply:Have you checked out the Lincoln Procedure Handbook on arc welding?https://www.jflfoundation.com/Produc...ProductCode=PHI bought an edition from the 50's. It's very nice and has some chapters on the history of arc welding.
Reply:@ AgapeGuy - a quick-look a available at www.weldinginfocenter.com/history/his_01.html. While not an book, perhaps writing to Hobart will lead you to a book on the history of arc welding."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:In 1989 while in the hospital having leg surgeries, my Mother went to the library & got me a book about El Paso Natural Gas from the local library.Lots of photos about stringing one of the first natural gas pipelines from Eunice New Mexico (well site) to San Francisco California. It was during the '30s & when they needed a bend in the pipe they set fire to tires under the pipe & let gravity bend the pipe. After product was introduced to the pipeline, everything above ground had to be monitored (roving workmen) because it would freeze inside the pipe & fires had to built under the pipe to thaw it out so it could flow. Unbelievable stuff. According to this book they're the ones who developed the four pass pipe weld procedure (root, hot pass, fill & cap) & the book follows the pipe line from town to town with photos. Trucks bringing in supplies were busted for bringing alcohol (prohibition), they had a prizefighter on the crew & set up fights in the towns they were passing thru. A very interesting & informative book until it got to the part about El Paso Natural Gas monopolizing the market. They spent something like 28 years in court before giving in. That part I found boring. You might look for it in your library. I don't remember exactly what the tile is, something in the neighborhood The History of El Paso Natural Gas.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:Agape Guy, Without kicking the "who was first?" hornets' nest too hard, I'll say that in my book it was A.O. Smith, Milwaukee.Smith was  way out on the pioneering edge, but gets little credit for it.I believe Smith was first with the coated electrode, as used today.Search  out A.O. Smith history and you should get plenty of early electric welding history.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 06-29-2013 at 09:31 AM.
