My oldest son is part of a Mothers Day Out program at the Methodist Church we attend, so when it came to getting his teacher a gift this year I decided to take matters into my own hands instead of paying too much for a Chinese built knick-knack. I used 1" .120" wall tubing for the cross and 1"x1/8" strip for the flame, the base is 2"x1/8" strip. It is all mild steel and welded with a MM211, the flame pieces are all hand shaped (i really need a ring roller and bender!) I ground all pieces to bare metal then dulled the shine with a wire wheel (before assembly) and lacquered. The ends of the tubing where also sealed with the 1"strip. I also left plenty of space on the base for a small candle. I showed some friends and have requests for four more already, those will not be gifts. $$$. Reply:Very nice. You might want to go with a bit thicker material for the base on the next ones. The thin stuff you used looks poor with the bit of warpage you got. You might want to build a simple fork type bender or "post" type bender. Denny here did a great one quite a while back that used a number of different sized posts on a heavy base with multiple pivot points. You simply screwed in what ever sized bolt or bolt and sleeve you needed and bent the material. I think he used a bunch of 1/2" sockets for different sized posts. I can't remember if that one he built had the wrap around arm like my bender or if I'm remembering another project. If you have a drill press you can probably bang one out from scrap material for almost nothing in maybe an hour or two if you get fancy, and less than 20 minutes if you simply need a down and dirty version..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:The warpage bugs me too, but it looks worse than it realy is because in the first picture it is leaning against the wahl and not square to the camera. I have already clamped it down and made it submit. There was only about 1/16"of warpage against a flat surface.Last edited by Standup Philosopher; 12-13-2011 at 07:34 PM.MM211Rigid chopsawDelta Drill Press
