I want to cut and weld on this, but not sure if I can. Its the old pipe from my well and I want to use it for a few different projects. Thanks
Reply:I will be using Oxy-Acetylene to do the welding.
Reply:Can you spark test it? Hard to believe well pipe would be anything other than mild steel.Everlast PA160-STH... and that's about it!
Reply:I was thinking it might be galvanized with toxic fumes. I wont even pretend to know much about metals or welding, I just play around right now doing non structural projects. Even to the point Ill have to google "spark test"
Reply:Spark test comes up gold colored.....
Reply:standard galvanized well pipe, nothing special about it, just clean off the galvanizing with a grinder before you weld and with O/A welding you can be outside, just grind it off and dont breathe the smoke and you'll be fine.
Reply:Thank you very much, now if will stop raining long enough....
Reply:Most folks replace steel well pipe with plastic well pipe nowadays. It makes them much easier to pull. If you want to weld it, it's steel probably galvanized. Clean it up and don't breath too much smoke. It's not that toxic, just don't hang your head in it for 8 hours or wear a respirator.
Reply:Looks like stainless... JkGalvo carbon steel, use dust mask when grinding broSal
Reply:If you are welding it outside you don't really have anything to worry about. It's hard to breath enough in to make you sick unless you are in a confined space. The old timers all say to drink milk before you weld a bunch of galvanized and it will keep you from getting sick. I don't know first hand... never gotten sick from it.Beck's Welding and Fabrication, Inc.-Misc. Metals Fabrication & Installation-
Reply:Never drank it before, but have after a couple of times. Fixes you right up.
Reply:How can you say its Galvanized? Its RUSTY!Not just DIRTY!Its plain old iron (steel) pipe!Grind it clean where you want to weld it and have fun messing around!

Reply:I thought you take a bath in the milk before going in the house so you don't stink.

Reply:When the anti zinc from the galvo wears it can rust... And that doesnt necessarily mean you wont end up with the galvo fumes and characteristic spark. But yes, galvo does not rust.Sal
