A friend of mine gave me a cast iron plate approx 4 feet by 7 feet and 1 inch thick. It has a big semi circle cut out of one side so there is at least 60% of the plate left.It will make (I believe) a pretty decent welding/bending table but I have a problem with it and need some advice. How does one drill through 1 inch of cast iron? I will need to afix this to support legs or something to get it to a proper height. To me 1 inch is a lot of metal to go through.I"ll post some pictures later as soon as I take some.Cheers.Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:use a drill, a drill bit and no cutting fluid.
Reply:Most cast iron drills pretty easy. I think you can do it.
Reply:what ya got for a drill??? u can always rent a mag drill and pop right thru it, no sweat...
Reply:Cast iron drills easy. I have drilled through cast iron dry but for 1" thick I would probably flood it with conventional dark (high sulfur) thread cutting oil to keep the bit cool and sharp. It is easy to get at most any home improvement center or hardware store. The local plumbing supply will have it for sure. What is the diameter of the holes?-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on. |
