Hi. Im having trouble putting in a good root for a 1g test. Its on 6mm plate and has a 1.5mm root face and a 2mm gap, its at 75amps with 1.6mm filler wire. I have only once managed to get the root to sit high? I have tried loads of times but its coming out flat. Any tips would be great. cheers
Reply:What is the material?
Reply:Stainless steel
Reply:I am thinking, without seeing the weld, that you should be adding more filler to push the puddle down or moving a little slower.  The best way for me to describe it is to move just fast enough to avoid a keyhole forming.  That way, you can be sure you are getting adequate penetration to the back side of the material.
Reply:I do not know why you put all the facts in mm's. What country do you live in???? TIG DA MAN?Just makes me have to convert everything. .236 plate???? I do not think so.Just say 1/16 filler wire. or .062Plate thickness 6mm= .236 thousandths. Probably 1/4 inch plate. right?Root gap 2mm=.078 thousandths Probably 1/6 inch or did you measure it ?Amperage set to 75 amps. Not enough.Set your amps to 150 amps and you will be using about 1/3 of that with the foot pedal. If you have a foot pedal. The filler wire should be .045 WITH STAINLESS, and you will have a much easier time. All the stores have 1/16 and it may be good for pipe welders, but on those plates and smaller things the .045 will be much easier.Right now it takes so long for the filler wire to melt that it means you have to go too slow. And the secret to TIG is HOT,CLOSE,FAST.In general TIG weld will be flat or concave. That is normal. They do not have a lot of deposition of metal like SMAW (stick welding)TIG is just to fuse the root of the weldment.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 02-14-2011 at 05:32 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:You also should not have a land with tig, you should knife edge the plates to help break down the edges.
Reply:Originally Posted by tigdamanIm in U.K. We work in mm here. 75amps is what the code is asking for. Everything i said is just what is on the paper work. If i could change everything to how it suits me i wouldnt be having a problem. Thanks for the reply
Reply:Originally Posted by Donoharmwell, probably you're a little rusty with the ss welding, 75A is just right for what he does over there.@tigdaman , u are walking the cup or freehand? watch the torch angle and electrode distance from work, don't move too much side to side , and most important Clean the coupon , if you stop use at least 3-4 sec downslope and 6-7 postgas, and cut the tip of the rod before u start again.
Reply:Originally Posted by Donald BranscomMakes me wonder, Is the plate .236  or 6mm??  Or is it really 1/4 inch plate???  Makes also wonder why if you are in the UK would you ask Americans for the information.

Reply:Right, The test got off to a pretty bad start to be honest. Im saying it was nerves. After 4 goes it clicked! I put down a good looking run with a nice even root, 1 spot was a little flat but it should be ok, The hot pass pushed it out a bit more. Got to wait about a week for all the results. I appreciate all the help from everyone. Donald Branscom, The reason i come to this forum is coz i find it more friendly and there are lots of clever people on here. Im just trying to pick up tips, I dont believe there is a right or wrong way to weld. You should weld the way they feel comfortable. Cheers everyone
