American Welding Society $150.00American Society of Mechanical Engineers $275.00New York State Department of Transportation $150.00A.S.M.E. Brazing $200.00Those are the prices of the Cert Testing my school charges. The Director said that just about anyone who passes the Course with a 3.0 can pass these test. Which ones as welders and Employers to you put the highest Emphasis of need or maybe what would show an employer that a Rookie has potential and is worth investing his time in.  Also I read Welding For Dummies. I know its for Dummies but hey it the basics in knowing what MIG TIG and Stick Where all about. Any other books you guys would suggest to read.
Reply:Hello KevinL90, before you plunk down a lot of cash on books like those consider a couple of things. One, become a student member of AWS, this qualifies you for a lot of reduced prices and sometimes free books from them. Another consideration, when you are an AWS member you can go to the local section meetings and rub elbows with a lot of local employers and others with knowledge in your field of interest. This interaction will often lead you to work and valuable contacts for your future endeavors. Most of the local sections also have "libraries" with many different books that you can access for various types of information without needing to put out cash. Often these groups will have tours, speakers, and other opportunities related to the welding trade that can be invaluable for folks starting out and those already associated with the trade. Just a few things for you to consider. Best of luck and regards, Allanaevald

Reply:Originally Posted by KevinL90Yea I just know very little about welding. I just dont want to enter class being the one who cant tell a tig from a mig. The director said the best welders to come out of the school are the one who never touched welding. They get to teach them from the ground up. Now I am sure some of that was his pitch to get to me in.
Reply:Originally Posted by SquirmyPugModern Welding Technology is a good book, not cheap though. Don't worry about being the one who doesn't know tig from mig, allot of the guys that go to welding classes don't know much about welding.. Just wasting time and money and still don't learn anything.
