Hey all..I have a brand new Lincoln oxy/acetylene kit that I bought from Lowes a few years back but barely touched it until today. It has Harris regulators. I picked it up because I figured Harris is ok, but may have been wrongI am not getting a good clean flame with the welding (#5) tip. I bought some files thinking it may just need a cleaning, but that didn't make any difference. When I adjust to a neutral flame, the outer flame (not the small cones) is verry jagged, rough, and uneven. I suppose a picture would really help, but hopefully a description is enough. The dial needle on the acetylene gauge is already getting suck and I have to tap it to let go and display the PSI.Also, am I supposed to hear sound from the torch? Not that its a leak, but just doesn't sound "smooth" insideI rushed to assume this is a lower end made in China kit, but looks like Gauges are USA, and torch is Poland...any tips appreciated. Thanks!Last edited by spawn_x; 08-01-2013 at 12:30 AM.
Reply:If this is one of those little kits with the MC sized acetylene cylinder and the 20 cf O2 cylinder that they sell, a #5 tip is way too big.Take a look at this charthttp://dennisalbert.com/Welding/WeldingTipGuide.htmAccording to that chart a #5 Harris tip requires a flow of 8 to 18 SCFM. Using the 1/7th rule for acetylene, you'd need an 80 cf cylinder to stay within the withdrawl rate. Even that tip is really too big if you have the gas cranked up. 1/7th on an 80 is roughly 11.4 SCFM. 1/7th of a 10 cf MC cylinder is like 1.4 SCFM.Looking at the chart the #0 tip is really the only one that is sized to stay within the withdrawl rate for continuous use. You can go a bit bigger for limited use, but you are way over what I'd think about using with that small cylinder. What you are describing may be due to you pulling the acetone out of the cylinder because you have exceeded the withdrawl rate..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks, should have mentioned - acetylene size 4 cylinder and ~125cf oxygemjust the torch/regulator kit, not the one with the small bottles

Reply:Look upIrishFixit. He has an incredible Oxyacetylene thread. Try to find it. I'll see if I can source it for you.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:Thanks, I will look through every page. The cutting end works perfect, only the welding attachment. I'm going to pick up a new tip today, seems like the only thing that could be wrong |
