Car guys and fabricators I need a little help

A friend who does body and show paint work has entered into a deal with a guy who wants a few cars restored ..Good newsHe has brought 6 cars in and he rented the shop next door so My friend has a place to store and work on them  more good news The guy who wants the cars done. he paid the rent on that shop 3 months in advance... But the shops are small and his paint shop has a big  paint booth in it so no much room in there...He had to tell him don't bring anymore until we get some done he also has other projects that are being worked on that were here prior and he is REAL anal about his body work and paint so it's not one day paint and body work and he gets paid a good price for his work but it's show quality when he is doneThe problem:Some are going to be frame off restores i need to make rolling dolly's for the body's to be mounted on while work is being doneThey will have to be adjustable to accommodate all kinds of body's and pick up beds etc... we are going to do a rotisserie laterI have some 2X2X1/4 wall tubing to fab stuff and he can get other hardware and casters for me to do this but were trying to do things on the cheap until some are done and he gets paid for the finished jobs..And he is being paid for work as it  progresses.But he need to do things starting Monday and i know you guys have a lot better ideas and designs than what he could buy which he don't really have the money to spare for something i could make and do better especially if some of you guys give me some ideas and help me with your knowledge i would be truly grateful as this is not not exactly my area of expertiseAnd i have looked at some of you guys posts but what i need to see to build some of it is not visible..i don't like doing guess work on critical things when i don't have to    Story is a little long but at least i'm looking at some work and i need it  badly And he's going to hire me to do the welding / mechanic work on some of these cars and i will get my rusty old truck finished and he is going to hire and train a friend of mine to do body work as it's hard to find competent help he has already hired and fired three guys who could not do the work as they talked the talk but couldn't Etc It has to be done the way he wants it and don't tell him the body work is done and it's not up to what he wantsand don't be doing drugs or anything else and come to work....  hence why he cannot find good helpLast edited by killdozerd11; 11-22-2012 at 03:07 PM.Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:We have three 2x2x1/4 rollers for frame offs , made them high enough so you have to reach hard to get to the roof.and one rotisserie also made out same metal with an adjustable rod at the bottom., use this to turn them so u can get to the hard spots. I can't find pics, and my wife will freak if i go to the shop today or tomorrow. Number 3 just had a 8lb 10oz baby boy yesterday...I'll keep looking.

Reply:Killdozerd! looks like you have some fun projects ahead of you the pic of the blue cart is what i was thinking of. make them as universal as possible and be able to slide your mounts  along the tubes and be able to weld and remove mounts to fit different cars or trucks . the bigger the tires the easier they will roll "i am sure you know that " so invest in good casters and the ones that lock you'll be glad you did, and what ever you do DO NOT WELD THEM  ON make plates that weld to the frame  and bolt them on that way if you have a caster that breaks it is not allot of work to replace 4 bolts and a caster imagine doing that with a car on it and welding a new one back on .    if you are going to build 6 of these that's a hell of allot of tubing you'll be surprised at how much time and money you will have in these is your friend aware of that ?you mentioned " on the cheap " if your friend just wants you to cobble a bunch of junk together do what you can to talk him away from that because you will be the one fixing it all the time . my brothers and i built a new race car  a few years ago and had a friend who does classic car restorations   do the paint and bodywork and does   beautiful  work . he had the biggest POS rotisserie and dollies that you would ever want to see "i wouldn't have took the effort to drag em out to the scrap pile " but thats what we had to use  we fought those damn things until we were done . whats   funny about guys like that is the will have every Snap On tool under the sun and have junk s**t like that to  hold the whole car that they will be climbing in an out of and underneath  . good luck and let me know if i can help . chrisLast edited by ct from shawnee; 11-23-2012 at 12:00 AM.
Reply:I think we can currently accommodate 2 maybe 3 racks and we will be out of room to move in the second shop once the body's are off the frames  but we currently just have 2 that are frame off out of the six cars so if i can build 2 for now get the body's off and two have to have the engines pulled to be sent to his rebuilder ...Most of these cars were projects that guys had to sell because they needed money and two have brand new engines BB Chevy's in a chevelle and a SS impala ..were ignoring the trans am and the GTO just arrived wednesday in pieces Gotta love jigsaw puzzles with pieces that maybe missing and wiring that i don't want to think about Oh JoyBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:I have looked at several others here and the suggestions of using a worm drive for rotating the body's would be the thing to use ..but i don't know if he can afford to go that way right nowAnd using a long hydraulic jack to lift would be better than the winches in the photos above ...i really don't trust cable or winches if i'm going to be under those body's working i would rather lift with the jack then lock in place I was also thinking about putting some kind of stiff legs down once it is rolled into a place you want it so the weight is not on the wheels all the time and it would not be able to move during rotating and working something like this is done on move able welding benchesNow me i would rather over engineer something like this than pushing a will it hold it issue ... Reply:The chevelle has a new BB engine in it just have to pull it back out because who ever started this didn't realize the brake booster and master cylinder won't clear the rocker cover and a few other little things like that.The GTO runs but no brakes of any kind and were still ignoring the trans am.The impala is a mystery with some pages missingOh Joy Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? I would make the uprights in the corners out of 2.5" sq. tube with a few holes drilled in them so I could use 2" sq. tube like a receiver hitch to adapt to different bodies. Reply:Sounds like your friend scored a pretty good deal... However, unless he plans on hiring about 10 -15 people I would only work on two maybe three cars at a time, organize and label EVERYTHING. Parts will accumulate quickly. Reply:Say KillDozer, thanks for your help in the past and i wish I had a better suggestion for your car dolly but ;  my ghetto style for a quick and dirty temporary/permanent solution would be to use scaffold and scaffold wheels. Can be found cheap cheap on CL sometimes. You could cut the scaffold to fit your needs and any left over frames/planks would surely get used in a paint /body/welding shop sometime.I would callit an Okie style but my friends from Oklahoma would beg to differ and call it a California. You decide. Anyway, have a happy NEW Year and you have some very nice projects. I bet your overwhelmed with them.As far as the rotiserie,  surpluscenter.com has some differentials that could be used in a fab for one but be sure to make sure you get the input ratio and output ratio the way you want them and not backwards like I did.

Reply:I'm not real fond of the color or painting all the chrome including the rims...He says he don't like chrome and just paint it allThe roof was already done in bedliner black and the first gallon of paint he brought was single stage that was supposed to have a color base shot first but i didn't know that and after 8 or 10 cotes you could still see the body work and primer spots right through the paint (10% pigment and 90% clear)So he had to bring another gallon of paint (the right stuff this time) and reducer and hardener for that paint and re shoot it but it came out good...But he didn't want to pay another 500.00 to color sand and buffAttachment 312041Attachment 312051Attachment 312061Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ??
