I started out TIG welding on a Hobart Tigmate. Eventually out grew it and wanted to upgrade. So I just picked up my new PT185 today. I got it home and set up and went to give it a shot. I was having the worst time trying to weld aluminum. No matter what I did, the aluminum would just oxidize and my weld would turn to crap! I thought I forgot how to weld overnight! Well, I decided to switch out my tig torch for the one that came on my Hobart machine. Did that and everything worked fine! I figured maybe I messed with a setting somewhere and screwed it up (not many settings to set, but still). Hobart torch = Weld CraftLincoln torch = Magnum My experiment. 1st. Set the machine at 100 amps, autoclean, and no pulse while using the Hobart tig torch, then weld. Weld came out fine.2nd. Switch back over to the Lincoln torch using the same tungsten and keeping settings the same, then weld. Weld came out CRAZY oxidized and crappy.3rd. Back to Hobart torch then weld right where the oxidizing ended, again not changing any settings and using the same tungsten. Welded fine. Here's the results. You can see where the super ugly spot is, is the 2nd step in my experiment. After that, I decided to pull the Magnum torch apart to inspect it to see if anything was obviously wrong. Nope, nothing that I could see. Put it back together and now it welds fine. I have absolutely no problems with it now. I had nothing BUT problems with the same torch 20 mins earlier. What gives?
