For Christmas I made this little truck for my nephew, it's about 12" long.I had fun doing it and was pleased with the result. So I started building one for myself. Needless to say this is going to take me a lot longer. I think I'll stick with the old truck body style, but you never know.So far, I've got a start on the frame, rear wheels and diff, look closely and you'll see the start of the 4 link suspension.I'll give the updates as I progressIf you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Stevinator, the wheels/rims I made. The tires I used 2 pieces of pipe with 2 rings of 1/4" round rod to give the side bulge. The rims are another piece of pipe, with centre pieces I turned in the lathe. Lay down lotsa bead and grind it away till I get what I want. I'm just finishing the rear coilovers now and hope to get some of the front end started tonight. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Here's what I accomplished last night. Got the rear coilovers tacked on, did some work shaping the front rails of the frame and started the front wheels (the round axle is temporary). I got a start on a dropped front axle but I'm debating if I should use tubular upper/lower control arms. What do you think, old skool dropped axle or high tech tubular arms...opinions appreciated. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Model A had A shaped arm that went from the front axel to a mount in the transmission. (to keep the axel from flipping over.)I bet most inspectors will look at the underside of your great model, and those additional intricatte parts will catch the eye.My opinion-make this one like an antique-make the next one like a dragster.
Reply:Vary cool

Reply:looking pretty spiffy slugger. i'm not much into the older cars and trucks, but this thing looks pretty cool. i vote for tube arms. if it is anything like the other one you made, it doesn't look like it's too stock anyway, so why try to stick to stock internals? if you want a real challenge, take it and make it custom. just my $.02.Later,Andy

Reply:SWells, another cool project. do it the way you want to, im sure it will be great either way. wish i could do stuff like that but i just dont have the patience or artistic ability.
Reply:wooo that is so cool love it!!!
Reply:Here's the update, I decided to stick with the old school look and went with the dropped front axle. I'll save the tube arm idea for another project. I used the 4 link again on the front.....just because I liked the look. The axle will actually swings up and drop on the arms, but I'll probably loose that one the shocks are added. A little cleaning up and refine a few shapes and it will be on to the hubs. The finishing nail will get cut off once I set the final ride height. Here's the picsIf you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:good god man... that thing is awesome. it amazes me at how much detail can be acheived with a welder on a project like this. what exactly are you using? i am guessing that it's probably not a stick welder, but who knows? lol. anyway, is there any way that you could show us how you make those wheels? mainly the front ones. i understand the concept. but i'm not sure how you would ehold everything in place exactly. the same thing with the suspension... well, anything on that project really... how do you hold all those tiny pieces in place while you weld them?again... great job. keep us updated!Later,Andy
Reply:Thanks Andy, I'm using a 110 volt flux core mig with .035 wire. A lot of the welds I end up doing by holding the part with needle nose pliers and tacking it. I usually disassemble as much as I can for easier access to the joint. The auto dim helmet helps a lot to get it all positioned before I tack it. Yes, I do burn up a peice every now and then and have to redo it. There is a lot of time goes into grinding, shaping and removing splatter (even with the anti-splatter spray on it). I made these wire frames before I got my auto dimmer helmet that was tough., The biggest challenge was getting the weld where you want it before I'd burn through. If you look at the front wheels in the second set of pictures I posted, you'll see that I drilled 5 holes through the rim and dropped in the spokes from the outside. The holes in the rim helped a lot to keep everything positioned. I made up a little jig to help centre it all up before tacking it down. After that I'll pour the bead to it and put it in the lathe to carve out what I want. The wheels still need a few hour work to finish but I have a good start on them. A lot of the magic to this project is not the welding but all the time I spend grinding. Any more questions feel free to ask.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them. That truck is sick, you are an artist. They got a kinda funky feel to them, Im really diggin on the new one your makin. We got guys who cant manage to lay a nice weld on anything with our fancy machines at work and you welded those wire frames together with flux-core?wow.
Reply:More Good Stuff!Speaking of grinding, how many different grinders are you using, does/would a Dremel tool have enough ump for the job?Bruce The Welding ChefLincoln Weld-Pack 3200 NORWELD StickStanford Hill Farm
Reply:I mainly use 3 different grinders, a 5" makita with grinding / cutting / flapwheel on it. I use the 3.5" cut off quite a bit for not only cutting up stock but for shaping also. Yes, I use my trusty Dremel a lot. The cut off wheels stacked 3 thick are great for shaping. I've burned up about 3 Dremels, they will work and are a lot slower, but probably won't last too long if you push it too far. Glad you enjoying the build. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Here's the progress from last night. Did some more shaping/polishing on the front wheels and tires then moved on to the front axle. The steering is starting to fall into place, with the spindles now on. I also got a good start on the engine with the rough shaping of the block and heads. Here's the pics.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:That's a neat build that you have going. You have a great imagination. I will need to keep tabs on this thread for sure
Reply:You asked for pictures so here ya go. I put in a few hours working on the engine. It still needs shaping and a lot of slag removal / clean-up. I'll eventually pull everything apart and shine up the pieces. The valve cover and intake are just tacked on for me to eyeball and will be removed again. Here it is:If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:holy hell batman... you are truely, truely talented. that thing is going to be awesome when you are done with it. ever thought about selling a couple? i bet those could go for big bucks to a few collectors. or even a non-truck model? maybe a 'vette or a 'stang?Later,Andy
Reply:Thanks aczeller. Yeah I've thought of selling, but I suspect it would be hard to find the person to lay out the bucks to make it worth while. The wire frames are 60-80 hours (even at $10/hr your looking at big bucks and I'm not sure I'd sell at $10/hr). This one is probably up to 40ish hours so far. But thanks for the compliments, I've having fun and building an interesting collection along the way.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:I had a thought as I caught up on your work, if you sold one of your peices for what you know it is worth to you, then the money could be put toward a nice new machine of choice, just a thought!  I thought I'ld share a couple metal sculptures I did a few years back. The company I used to work for had a Christmas tree ornament making contest every year. The only stipulations were, the entries must be made with normal company materials and be small and light enough to decorate a tree.My first was a 3rd place winner!Another was not in the running onnacounta it had nothing to do with Christmas!?! Reply:ive got to say that you are a very talented person, ive seen some of your other posts,i still havnt gotten over the true fire flames you do,ive been painting along time so i really know what it takes for that,im a hobbie welder and i couldnt begin to try to build that truck,i hope you make the big bucks cuz you sure got the skills and tallent to do so,great job
Reply:Your truck looks great!!! I can attest to the time involved in making these sculptures. I made this in 1987. It took around 40 hrs to make. I didn't have any equipment myself so the whole thing was made at work. As far as selling these things, I haven't had much luck.I have made quite a few items in the last few years and have tried ebay, craft shows and even a store in a brand new mall that sold things made by Missouri artists and haven't sold many. I tried to price them accordingly for the amount of time and materials I had in them and I didn't have much sucess. Maybe the wrong places I don't  know. I will post some pics of some of my work in another thread. Attached Images
Reply:Again, Wells that thing is sick man! I cant wait til this guy gets a TIG welder!
Reply:dude thats so awesome. youve inspired me to do something along these lines at work! have many hours would you guestimate youve spent on this groovy lil project? also have you ever considered some smaller die grinders? like snap on, blue point, or ingersoll rand? i use those alot on smaller stuff and i love em!2001 dodge 3500 with custom bed, 1995 miller 44dlx welder and all the equipment any welder needs! Reply:jimbo0261, I believe what your saying and am doing it because I enjoy it, I've given more to friends / family than sold. It's my sanity break and that's worth something. Cool little bike you made there. Post some of your other projects, I'm curious. Here's a chopper I made a few years ago.Buggy_builder, I've got around 40 hours into it so far. I have a decent compressor (18.5cfm) and 2 cheapy die grinders, 1 "regular" size and a smaller one, are you talking about something different or will I see a big difference with a decent brand?
