got my hands on a diesel powered heater from a wagon.need to get fuel tank for it but new ones are £100+, would it be ok to use a 10l steel jerry can with oulets welded in?would be getting it welded as not confident enough to weld fuel tank bits.cheers
Reply:New or used? On a new can, I'd have no issues welding on one. That wouldn't be any different than welding a new unit up from scratch.I really wouldn't want to do a used one however, especially if there's a chance it was used for gasoline. Can it be done, sure. The guy doing the work simply needs to know the procedures for welding up containers that contain flammable vapors. Most guys don't know the correct procedures however. You say you won't be doing the welding. ( good idea) If some idiot who "thinks" they know what they are doing, wants to risk their life for a few bucks, that's their problem..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:best one with a fuel tank was in norway one winter and had one your lads attached to us ( thats when i found out your jeeps were all petrol ).our landrovers were diesel and it used to freeze so we put burner under tanks.this lad came out saw flames under fuel tank panicked and used hose to put it out.tooks us ages to stop laughing and explain to him.
Reply:Fill a tank with water before welding, if it has ever contained anything that might be considered flammable.Contrary to popular opinion, I do NOT have a pet turkey that craps molten steel.  It's a goose.
Reply:Early eighties, I worked in a plant that started using paint for trim on mobile homes. We needed a place to drain water for paint clean up so it was decided to use a large tank that would just get emptied by vac truck. The general manager gets the bright idea to use an old 500 gallon fuel tank from a farm. Of course the paint is water based so the tank would freeze in the winter being it will be outside, above ground. The general manager gets a brighter idea that an engine block heater could be installed to take care of the problem. So the maintenance man sets it all up. He plugs in the cord for the block heater, and in less than a minute we hear an explosion that is loud enough to call for a plant evacuation because nobody knows where the hell the noise came from. Thank god the damage to old Clarence was confined to his underwear.Oh, I vote no on welding the tank.
Reply:Sorry a little OT. Little Jeep I am from Louisville as well. I was from PRP. I drive the long way around the Shawnee expressway at night. The smell is so strong I can stand to drive by. I have heard several times that Louisville doesn't monitor the air quality after 4:30 pm. So that is when things "ACCIDENTALLY" get vented.About 3 years ago I was doing a job at a plant and one of the maintenance guys was cutting some adhesive barrels in half to keep people from reusing them. He did 10~20 of them and went to a new batch. The first one of the new batch was full of vapors it launched like a rocket. My ears rang for hours and I was 100 ft away. That guy lost a huge part of his intestines from shrapnel. Please take the tank to the professionals that is what they do everyday.

Reply:Just drill a hole in the top of the can, fill with water just under the hole and weld a bung on, then make a tube with a screw fitting to thread into the bung, or just drop the tube through the hole and weld in place so that the tube is a half inch or so off the bottom. This way there are no fittings on the bottom of the tank to weep fuel if you only got 99.9% welded.

Reply:Just a thought.Instead of making a fuel tank from a jerry can, could you use an outboard motor tank instead?  Provisions are already made for setting up fuel connections with quick attach fittings that also allow for removal and transport for refueling operations.Example only:http://www.cabelas.com/product/Boati...es/_/N-1100608RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches

Reply:Fuel tanks can be welded on while at roush we modified tanks all the time. The tanks  were emptied  out and fluid was added ( I can't remember the name of the solution) about half full and an air bubbler was added to airate the solution for I think a day or so then when complete we checked the tank with an analizer to see if the levels were low enough for welding. The term we used was purging the tank. Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
