Production TIG welding

I have been working on some small parts for a machinist.  He pays per piece, so you have to haul @ss to make money on these things. They also have to look halfway decent. On one of the ends with the long ends, they dont like you to crest over the top of the edge with weld. So you have to direct most of your heat to the round pin and let the weld roll up to the .063 wall tube, which is not easy.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI4JhFwaoJE[/ame]Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Hey Brainfarth,Looks like you have a nice jig setup for the initial placement of the ends. Did you design/fab the jig or was it furnished?  Many have a hard time with production welding, although, I liked it as a change of pace. You look to be quite efficient with that setup & your weld time looks great & nice results...... you should do well..... hopefully. Great video & it would serve some of the newbies/youngsters to just watch the smoothness of your movements that result in a term I use for production...."Repetitive Consistency". Reply:Looks good, how many of those did you do? I did 750 3/8" stainless pins to 1" stainless nuts..doing parts like this can really make your wrists hurt
Reply:Brainfarth,Stupid question, but why not just a small (.025) solid wire.  You would be able to keep the heat down and still have a good looking weld and at a faster pace.Sorry just my 2cents.I am tired of Ketchup, I want the Gravy...

Reply:Thanks, The welding fixture was supplied by the machine shop, although there could be a few changes made to it. And as for quantity, it was 100 pc of 2 styles.  I'm up to around 18 an hour. A guy I know can weld around 24 an hour.  I need to watch him in action to see what shortcuts he is taking.  I'm not sure why they dont go with a mig process other than these are high-end dentistry products, so they have to look expensive to justify the price they fetch for them.  And yeah.. I do have to grind my tungsten from time to time. I would have edited that out of the video if I had caught it. Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:I dont always grind them after a dip.  It depends if a gob of metal stuck to it and is messing with my focus. From the looks of what I did there, I might have lost just the very tip of the tungsten which wouldn't interfere with the arc too much. And unless the tungsten falls off and seriously fouls up the weld, I'll have to grind it out. Those statements are for cosmetic welds only.  If this were to be an xray weld, I would play by the rules with being clean and sharp as possible while cleaning everything back out of the weld.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
