Anyone ever seen a metal baby bed? Or made one?I got a little one coming in December (#4) and I'm trying to talk my wife into letting me build a crib. Shes just not having it! She says it unsafe and thinks its going to be an over built monstrosity. I kinda just wanna build one. And then maybe later I can skin it in diamond plate and make a tool box or something..What's your opinion?
Reply:To the Wife of jamesyarbroughYou need to take-command all of the pending life-safety issues, and put your husband in a steel cribe.Opus
Reply:I've thought about it for a gift when I heard my sister was expecting. Basically, if you build it to current design and safety standards, it will weigh as much as a car and cost nearly the same. Just buy one.My name's not Jim....
Reply:That's so weird I was going to make my daughters toddler bed because the frame on the underside with the springs is bending with all the jumping shes doing on it. Im thinking some 1x1 angle iron with simple rectangle design to fit the mattress. and cross supports and head board with wood. No drawings yet but I plan to make some
Reply:James, congrats to you.As wonderful as it would be to know that your child is sleeping in something you made, it's just not worth it. it's gonna be cheaper to buy and you'll have less worries.Starting on a bed frame with a head and footboard for a few years from now is always an option.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:The only valid point (in my opinion) she made was kids bump their head a lot. Wood is softer than steel. Then if I just wrapped the bars in foam that would be cool but I would have a kid with a belly full of foam.
Reply:A local guy is selling a steel door and bars from a real jail cell. You could cut that down and make a crib. Then when the child becomes a teen, just weld it back up. Reply:That's it, start the kid off right by putting them behind bars right from the start! .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Keep gaps under 3 1/2" or over 8" with no protrusions that snag. Google CPSC Playground codes, they might even have a pamphlet for cribs and child beds. I think it would work out fine.
Reply:Have a look at how many recalls there have been for properly manufactured cribs that are commercially sold. When teams of engineers in the big companies that only make baby products make mistakes that end up killing children (even after rigorous ULC and other lab tests) there's no way in hell you can top them with something cobbled together in your shop. There are so many little things you would never think of, far beyond the spacing between bars. Don't trust the life of your child to your DIY skills. Your confidence in your craftsmanship needs to be set aside when someone tells you this might endanger your family. Put your pride (or ego) away and listen to your wife.Last edited by Aquafire; 08-10-2013 at 10:29 AM.Reason: typoLincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:Welding the top back on when they become teenagers like OLDENDUM suggested is the best idea.
Reply:There were 4 of us kids and we all used the old wrought iron baby bed. Must of had at least 3 coats of lead based paint for us to cut our teeth on. Build it. Dont send them chinamen no more money. Put your foot down and show us you are a man. The kid is likely to grow up wether you build it or not. Go for it. Want pics.
Reply:I think most of the recalls were for the drop down front section. I don't plan on doing a drop down thing. Just raising and lowering the bed plat form would do. Heck now you guys got me all scared about it...might just do something else

Reply:Next time you get an idea, just share it with us. Dont ask for everybodys advice on the safety. Too many out there cant build anything because of the paranoia of someone getting hurt. If everybody done that we would still be pushing square wheels with a stick.
Reply:This is a rough design I made for my 3year old bed im going to build her. Those cheap *** Chinese made beds cant handle American children I guess. However this is to scale made of 1x1 angle iron and wood mixture. I plan on smoothing out every inch of this bed for my little girl. I know I can make it stronger and better than those factory workers in bejing. MADE IN AMERICA is stamped on this thing. People always preach about safety. I know safety rules and regulations and last time I checked kids will be kids. They get "boo-boos" no matter what and the harder you try to prevent them they still find a way. This is life and this is how you learn. Attached Images |
