i see that mig welders can be used with just the wire-feed. What then, is the purpose for the gas---when and why would you need to use it?2) What type(s) of gas?
Reply:There are 50 different welding processes.MIG or (GMAW) uses a solid wire with gas to make a shield to keep oxygen away from the weld. There is no slag on the surface after the weld is completed.(FCAW) uses a wire that is hollow inside and contains a powdered flux that when heated by the welding process makes the gas to keep the oxygen away from the molten weld metal. The FCAW process leaves a light slag on the surface that needs to be wire brushed before painting or re welding. In a beginning welding class all of these welding processes are explained.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 02-24-2011 at 05:49 AM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:welds are hot and they need to be protected from oxygen.. all welding processes in one way or the other include some way to accomplish that.

Reply:Check out his previous posts. He's the one that wanted to build a dragster with no welding experience. He also claims he is in a welding school and should post these questions to his teacher. What gas do i use for mig and why?
Reply:The investigation begins.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I have used inner shield, outter shield, and gas coverage......I like the gas type MIG for the simple reason it doesn't splatter all over your part and burn your clothes off...After tig welding for 20+ years it sucks to have to MIG something with CO-2...... Reply:Mig and FCAW use CV DC+ or CV DC-. Gas makes for cleaner looking welds but flux-core is use in building construction especially in seismec regions. |
