I finally got a chance to get the pics off my phone. I'd collected up a few shots of what I thought where pic worthy (and safe to post) projects for the last 1 1/2 months.   First we'll start off with the shaft from a ditching machine. Just a small shaft with a small oops.  First pic is the oops. Second shows that we had to take the sprocket segments off the big end in order to swing it in my lathe. Just barely cleared then.  Third pic. We'll you gotta do what it takes to get the job done. In this case the only place I could put a steady was right where I need to machine. So I had to machine a new place for the steady but reaching it was a bit of a challenge.   BTW it's not turning as fast as it looks in the pic. The cell phone is a little slow on shutter speed. I didn't speed it up till I got it full on the close steady rest.  Fourth pic is the socket ready for the stub. Fifth is the new stub and socket. It's been a while but I think I made it 0.003" tight. The small end of the stub is what's going into the socket. The rest was bigger to be machined after shrink fitting the stub in place.   One more pic coming for this one. Reply:And here's the finished shaft. I didn't weld it. I figure it'll be stronger without the stress riser from the weld.  I'll go ahead and put the gate pics in this post since there's only four of them. I was going to take more but the battery on my phone went dead.   First is overall. The opening is 20' wide and the gates are 8' tall with 10' sheets going on them.   Second shows the latch system. We've worked this latch system on 5 gates so far. It's needed in this windy area to keep the gates from shearing things like locks. The box protects the main lock while the bar gets a separate lock on the pin. The stakes on the bottom help to keep the gate from rocking back and forth gaining momentum as well as help keep the gates open in the wind. You can see part of one of the gates on the other end from this shot with the sheeting on.  Third shows the hinges. I place the hinges out that far so that the gates can swing all the way flat against the fence. That helps to keep the wind from blowing them shut during a blizzard (since this is a wrecker pen they are often opened in those conditions).  Fourth shows the stops. We learned these are needed on the last set of gates I hung for him. If the wind catches the gates when closing them they can swing closed hard enough to bend hinges and everything unless these stops are there. I've always wanted to add a shock or rubber bumpers to these but never had the time. So far they've proved out on the last set of gates so I copied them here. Reply:Ok here's some shots of a bumper remount we did.  The first shot shows the new brackets I installed after cutting the factory ones off.   Second is a overall shot. I used 6" channel iron and 1/4" x 6" strap for the mounts. I would of run the channel all the way across but I didn't have enough in stock.  Third is the frame it's going on and fourth is after mounting.   Fifth shows the factory mounts. I see this a lot. These custom bumpers just mounted to the light weight factory mounts. Worse in this case is who ever mounted it left out the bolts that held the reinforcing straps to the mounts. As you can see somebody tried just welding it without luck. Reply:Let's see what's left oh yeah the table.   First pic shows a forest of clamps. Oh sorry there is a table in there somewhere.   Actually there's two tables. On bottom is my yet to be finished fabrication table. As you can see it may not be finished but it's definitely been in use. On top is a unique table or rather form or jig might be better term. It's going to be used for building rebar rings. Anyway one thing I learned quick with my new fab table was that it had a voracious appetite for clamps. Fortunately I managed to get a fantastic deal on some good clamps from Enco right about Thanksgiving.   On with the show. The second pic shows the completed table. One minor problem is that it's bowed. I figured it would the way I was forced to weld it up. It was way to much trouble to flip the top while I was welding it (that's 2" 3/16" wall tubing with each leg spanning 10') so I welded all the sides and the top of the table before flipping to finish the bottoms. It warped as expected. The third pic shows after flame shrinking in a few key points to bring it back closer to straight. The truth is it wouldn't of hurt them being bowed like it was but I didn't want to let it out of the shop like that with such a easy fix.   The fourth and fifth pics shows some of the strategically placed flame shrink points I used.  Well looks like that's all I've got for now. Reply:You've been busy! I remember when every pickup had a spare tire up front... don't see that too often these days.On picture 5 of the first post (of the very fine stub repair) you can see a bit of your chuck tree/arm with a three jaw hanging. Can it hold two chucks or just one? Do you have a better photo? I use something similar on my LaBlonde to change chucks and I'm thinking of setting it up so I can store all my chucks to save all the chain fall time.
Reply:What I show here is small fraction of the stuff I do. Many things I just don't have time or don't think appropriate to post here. There's not to many around here who run them there. I have one good customer who does on all there trucks in the winter time. You can't really get away with it in the summer. This is a different guy but one of the few others I know of who runs it like that. I thought I had a better pic of it on my web site but I can't find it right now. Here's a rather lousy pic of the one I used at my former employers which was the inspiration for mine.   It's got a place for two chucks so I can swap them. I can remember a discussion of making it possible to have more chucks than two on rec.crafts.metalworking years ago after people seeing a picture of mine or the one above. I thought I'd taken a better pic of mine to show them at the time but I'm not finding it.  There is a pic without anything in the lathe on this page.http://members.dslextreme.com/users/...ook/lathes.htm  But it doesn't show the chuck holder swung out so you can see the other side.   I'll see about getting a shot of it soon.Last edited by irish fixit; 12-31-2011 at 12:52 AM.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:That shaft wouldn't bee off a Cleveland trencher would it?
Reply:Thanks for the photos. I built this one a few years ago, picture #4 of post #3: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=39706 I now might have the inspiration to expand it. I need to store 2 large chucks (plus on the spindle).
