I want to make some strap hinges like the ones shown below but I am not sure whether to get the local steel supplier to bend the straps for me or if I can do something else. I know when I built some steel pipe gates I just welded the pipe nubs to the edge of the gate but I don't know how to make a hinge like this for building a wood gate.  http://www.snugcottagehardware.com/S...dware/8307.htm

Reply:To make hinges like that requires you heat the steel to get the bends you want. If you take a look at some blacksmithing sites like Iforgeiron, you will probably be able to find detailed descriptions of how they are done. When I forge hinges like this I usually heat the area where I want the bend to go, then bend it around a mandrel the diameter of the pin I'm going to use. That makes a 180 deg bend. Leaving the mandrel in place, I then close the eye by either "crushing " it in a vise tight to the mandrel, or forging it shut on the anvil. I do all this at at least an orange heat, if not slightly higher. If your hinges keep coming out loose, drop down one size for the mandrel for forming. Then after you get the eye formed, reheat the eye and clamp it back in the vise below the eye. Drift the correct size mandrel thru the eye and it will be the correct size. It sounds more complicated than it is. The big trick is working with the steel hot enough to be pliable. You won't get tight bends if the steel is only at a dull red. I've done some by using spot heating with an OA torch, but it's a lot easier done with a forge. The "cheating" way to do it would simply be to weld tube to the straps, but you won't get the same look on average. If you weld a drilled block to the strap, then forge over the corners of the block you can get "close" to what a hand forged hinge looks like, but it's not quite the same..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Looks pretty easy. A piece of 1/2" square rod welded across a strap with a little piece of 1/2" pipe welded to the the square rod and you have the post piece. Flat strap with a piece of pipe welded across it will make the gate piece.
Reply:Here's a video that shows exactly how it's done.http://video.pbs.org/video/1772044886/Slightly different hinge design, but more ideas how hinges were forged.http://www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop/video/2700/2712.htmlLast edited by DSW; 08-20-2013 at 11:05 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:could  weld a pipe section on the flat, Of the needed size.A heavy schedule pipe would work better for the hinge but reasonably simple to make,.
Reply:crap I should have known TSC would have those things reasonable. I still can't find used steel pipe for building gates locally, I happend to get lucky to find enough to make two wire filled frames.
Reply:I just checked TSC and they want over $10 for one of the bigger strap hinges with out the pinI did how ever find some nice steel wire mesh I can use for my hog pen dividers when I went to search for pieces I could use to build hinges For some reason these people around here just don't understand the value of selling perfectly good material instead of sending it to be sheared up and shipped to the steel mill. When I was growing up in new england my father and I cleaned up hundreds of auction sites and we almost NEVER scrapped out ANY usable material since there were so many people and places that would buy it. I just don't know what this world is coming to people are wanting to scrap usable material and take nearly half or less than someone would pay for it as usable material.
Reply:People today want a quick buck. They don't want to sit on something and wait for someone to agree to pay more money..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
