Reply:What certs will you get in school? Certs are only good if the employer accepts the certs, most school certs are not accepted unless some employer writes them into their program. Hence the retraining at the Union. Have you contacted the union to see if they are hiring? Do you have in writing from the Union that you will have a job after school or is your teacher just blowing hot air.Ask your teacher who his union contact is and speak the Union to see if this is all true. School would be best as many people show up as welders and have no clue what 7018 is and this list can go on forever depending on the individuals background. Depending on your background or knowledge school may be the best thing if you have little knowledge about welding as there are high expectations in the real world if you can not read a print or know much about the equipment. As for welding skill, we have all kinds of welders show up from school who try to pass my works 6G 2 inch extra heavy wall pipe test that is radiographed and most fail and many "experienced" welders fail also. Best experience is to weld with a welder who is certified to the work you are training for. But if you do not know the basics may be best to just stay in school.Last edited by dva; 08-19-2013 at 12:55 AM.

Reply:Have you talked to the boilermakers or pipefitters unions yourself? Reply:I'm lost on the retraining part by the union. If you can pass their welding test why would you have to be retrained? Something's not right. If you past the test/s you should be able to shave time off your apprenticeship. I understand the training in other aspects of the trde, but not retraining you to weld, unless your school is teaching you wrong, and if that's case, leave now.. I would talk to them(union) first hand. I know our union isn't taking apprentices in, and the ones that are in, start school soon. Once school starts they don't take any one... The union you're trying to get in may be different. For loans, go to aes.com or look up loans for college, I forget the website, but there are loans for students in your situation.
Reply:Tylersloan, Are you serious about how much you have spent on school and only being there for 6 weeks. Ouch. There are other ways to learn how to weld. Its called on the job training. North Dakota companies will hire you pay a wage and teach you to weld. I have a friend out there. To be good you will need experience anyway. Might as well paid for it. I am 63 went to welding school 3 weeks , quit and went to work. Cant say the school did anything for me either. Good luck on learning to weld.
Reply:Post your location. There maybe members with details for your location. Do you have government loans ?
Reply:How exactly is he getting you in ? Boilermakers are chosen through a independent way. Even most unions are lottery system. **** my friend was waiting today for the carpenters union I'm nyc didn't even get an aplication

Reply:im in pekin illinois right next to peoria i have a gov grant and a gov loan right now the grant i dont have to pay back the loan i do after school .im looking for work now been going to the pipeline daily waiting on a helper to quit also filling out apps daily .my wife dose work so were using her income to live on its tight but we make it work we just say only 8 more months of this crap and we will be good . im going to call the hall today and see whats up ill post back soon thanks for the reply's
Reply:If you get on a pipeline, you can kiss going to school good bye, you won't have time to go,so make sure you get your loan prorated for time spent in school. Hopefully its not the point where you only get a percent back. Being on thepipeline iisn't for everyone, so make sure you spend some time on one to make sure that's the welding and traveling you and your wife want to do. Def call the hall, report back on what they tell you directly. Ask how busy they are too, just because you get in doesn't mean you will be working.

I'm guessing that this is the 4 years of 'retraining' that the boilermakers down there require. Agree that some time should be shaved for entering with prior tickets. Jump through all the hoops and learn something along the way. Once you reach journeyman, you can bounce all over North America.Good luck to you, Tylersloan.
Reply:For tylersloanJust to babble on as to what could be happening during an apprenticeship. Boilermaking isn't all pressure work. A lot of the times for storage tanks, dams, smoke stacks, precipitators (pollution devices), breaching.......all that is required is a four position plate ticket. Add mig experience and make yourself more valuable. Power plant going to have a major rebuild? You may need your pressure to get onsite but it'll be the new hires in there gouging the demolition. Dirty work done? The loafers get weeded out but the good get to stay on with a chance to learn. Big pieces coming in? Temporary structural installation and removal required. Maybe an overhead trolley system, even built railway tracks into a building.Did a search on Illinois's heavy industry. Looking good.
Reply:yeah ill have my mig certs in about a month then on to tig cant wait thanks OldSparks
Reply:Most AWS locals offer scholarships and educational grants. Your school administration office should have listings of where to apply for general grants. Also ask your instructors. Often they are members of AWS.
Reply:You paid over $17,000 for welding school?!?!?! Have you ever heard of community college? And to be honest, if you are pretty much "in" with the union, why are you even going to school? Sounds like a waste of money (and time) to me.Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life

Reply:Lets look at the positive side of this. With your current schooling YOU own your certs. That means you can take them any where you want, have your own company, any thing you choose to do. If you have your certs though a company or union THEY own them. So if you leave for what ever reason you start all over. Sure you will still most likely have to test in to jobs but you have the experience of that test and a card in your pocket that says you know what your doing. So stay in school. I'm really hoping your getting your degree for the cost you are paying. There are goods and bads with being in a union, please do your homework first and make sure it's what's best for you and your family. The first 2 years will be really tough!!! They want to weed you out early if you can't cut it. When it comes to getting in unless your talking to the person that can hire you or sign you in everyone else Is full of crap. Go to the rep and get your info from them it will save you a lot of time and headache. First stop for getting your school paid for is to the student aid counselors. They should be able to help you apply for more grants or the last resort loans. Loans are bad!! But a way to an end. Good luck
Reply:Yeah 15 k for college courses that you could learn as someones helper in a plant or pipeline scenario...for FREE. Also make more money than most people pulling over 85k a year as a helper. Regardless of your certs thats for personal accomplishment. Hardly any company will accept your certs. Ya they will look at them and make you test regardless...
