This is the start of a metal storage rack i started yesterday built out of stuff i already had layin' around. Been gonna do it for a while now and since ive got the new toolbox (old one in the backgrouond of first pic), i need all the room i can get. Still a few bits a pieces to do before finished. Need to put another bracket above the garage door to take 6M lengths. Bottom arms are for 3m lengths.100mmX50mmX6mm uprights and 400mmL X 4mm arms.180 amps 27V90-8-2 Ar-CO-O2 Attached ImagesLast edited by LarryO; 01-12-2012 at 01:50 AM.
Reply:Nice design. I've thought about something similar myself. The uprights are bolted to the floor?
Reply:Got the idea from Mick120, , but mine only has a 3 deg layback as to save space. Its only a single brick wall and i didn't want to hang all that weight off it.Yup, bolted to the ground with 10mm concrete bolts. Also need to add some upright supports to stabilize them and some chain to stop them just before vertical. Im sure they will come forward a little when loaded. Little hard to describe but i'll post pics when done.I dont keep that much steel, but when i do its good to have somewhere to put it. Ive got a bot of 1m-2m lengths that i find hard to throw out. They seem to come in handy so often.Last edited by LarryO; 01-12-2012 at 04:44 AM.
Reply:Will you be adding a horizontal piece between the uprights so they are braced against each other? I like how you beveled the ends of the supports instead of just plain old 90* straight cuts.

Reply:Good job. I just did something quick and dirty. It amazes me how long it took with me tripping over stuff on the floor to finally do it.
Reply:Just thought, but on the uprights, behind the rack you could put a small support like you have on the front (say 6" long). The you could store smaller pieces of rod and the like behind it as well ?
Reply:You're going to join the uprights together, right? Also, I love the brickwork walls of your shop!
Reply:WOW! I could only use material that heavy when one of my contractor friends gave it to me! On mine, http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=62614, Pic#2, I used 2x2x14ga high arms (50x50x2mm) and 11ga low, and I could not put enough metal in it to bend, deform or break it. Upright was 2x4x1/8" (50x100x3mm). X-bracing was 1x1x1/8 angle, uprights 4'oc.Last edited by Fabn4Fun; 01-12-2012 at 10:36 PM.

Reply:Added a X brace today to stiffen it up. Feels very solid now.I used stuff i had once again and all that i have long enough and enough of was 18mm round bar. Should do the job. Seems ive built a industrial strength metal rack for Medium to light use. At least i know it want fall down.Second pic is of the front of the foot bolted down. I dont know why i didn't take a pic of the back. Last pic is a metal crate i have been using as storage for a while now and as you can see its out of control. I gonna cut the crate down by a 1/3 so it will fit under the bottom rack and i'll put my small pieces their. Attached Images
Reply:Got some metal on the rack this arvo. Probably wont store a lot more except for when i got a job on. Unfortunatly i dont have enough room to seperate steel, Alum. and SS, but i kept steel to the bottom, SS to the top and Alum. to the front.Bottom rack is for heavy sections and top for long 6m sections when i add the rack above the side garage door.Still left room for another rack between the second and the top when i ge more 100mmX50mm.Im not gonna put the wall supports on as the thing is stable without them and the weight aint gonna get much more than what it is now.Enough ramble. Just excited because this has been a gonna do for at least the last 3 years. Attached Images
Reply:Looks good, should hold up well for your needs. I'd say it looks like you have room between the top and middle brackets for one more set to be added for more storage capacity. That way everything could be spread out more to make it easier to pick thru to get out what you need. You have the piece you need to do it, right there on the middle rack, the blue piece. Also an upright tab on the ends could prevent round stock from rolling off.
