I've used Ace brand, Rust-Oleum, and XO Rust. They all fade in the sun and are not the most durable. I want to be able to buy paint by the gallon as well as in a spray can. What paint do you guys use? A lot of our work is for the mining and construction industries, so it needs to be durable.Dynamic MetalworksMontrose, CODynMetalworks.com

Reply:Epoxies will chalk in sunlight but very durable.  Urathanes are better against chalking but are not as durable against chemicals also will not withstand being under water for long periods.  These both require sandblast to white finish and immediate application.  You might consider galvanized.  It ain't pretty but very durable and cost often matches epoxy.    If you are painting preparation is most important, slow drying paints generally are better.  In the end it is best to consult your paint supplier.  After all if they steer you wrong you are not comming back so good advice is in their best interest.
Reply:I use rust oleum 9800 urethane mastic. It is expensive, probably $150 a gallon. Other than that, automotive paints are durable, even the enamels. Top of the line will be IMRON but it is very expensive. Any of the urethanes will keep a gloss, unlike epoxies. They also have a little bit of plasticy give to them which makes them less prone to chipping.
Reply:I have used Sherwin Williams direct to metal (DTM) with success.  Easy application and clean  up has been durable.  Everything I've used it on stas out in the weather,

Reply:I use PPG automotive paint.  Really tough stuff.  I don't think you're gonna find anything in a rattle can that compares to one you need to apply with your own gun.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:That's true, everything mentioned wont come in a spray can due to the hardner . Although you could probably get a touch up can of enamel to match.
Reply:I'm a big fan of Devoe Coatings for rough service. Bar Rust epoxy primers are incredibly tough, and the Devthane urethane topcoats are good, too. They can be applied by spray or with rollers.I'm using Awl Grip urethane for my big boat refit top coat, but that's because I want the shine to last decades. For the engine room or any equipment off the boat, I'd stick with Devoe products.
Reply:I did forget to mention my favorite spray can go to. If a rough texture is acceptable then spray on truck bed liner gets pretty dang tough once fully cured.Lincoln precision TIG 275Millermatic 140 MIG
Reply:As q240z said, I have heard a lot of good things about Awl Grip, I just haven't used it. They use it on a lot of railing projects in Hawaii, so if it holds up there it must be pretty good. It is a little cheaper than the rust oleum 9800 I was talking about. Although the 9800 is DTM and awl grip needs primer.
Reply:Awl grip is a marine paint, that makes it more expensive, PPG Concept is similar but easier to use, still expensive. Both can kill you dead. I like Sherwin Williams I buy coal tar 5 gal pail at a time there. I have a sand blasting booth I use alot of paint.  Years ago I painted a crane bright red to match the company color.  It quickly turned pink! Everyone blamed someone else ha! Repainted with standard Safety Red no custom mix at the paint shop, it lasted twice as long but is slowly turning pink...For what I do everything gets DuPont Industrial Coatings Tufcote3.3PR High solids Fast Dry Alkyd primer after sandblasting to white metal, then Grahhm Industrial Finish Heavy Duty Polyurethane Enamel. Simple tough relatively cheap.
Reply:Coal tar in Ca used to be 4 gallons tar to 1 gallon hardner. Now it is about a pint of hardner do 5 gallons. It is a very brittle paint and it seems that you can't give it a second coat. I use it for pontoon boats. My last project I used PPG urethane as an experiment. It was considerably cheaper than the other paints I was talking about. Time will tell, so far it looks good although it seems to chip easier than the 9800 rust oleum.
Reply:The formula for the coal tar I buy changed last year but is still 4 to 1. It is getting more brittle however I never had issues with a second third or fourth coat. I never let anyone mix tar for me now, my guys always ran out of hardener before tar. My trick for mixing tar is a heat lamp for an hour with the bucket off the cold ground.  Interlux used to sell tar in quart kits good for pontoons.  Tar wont stick to metal flexing and flopping around now. Most of my work is fixing floating steel docks.
Reply:Where does farm implement paint fall into the mix as far as durability and what not?
Reply:So it looks like every brand of paint in the world has been recommended in your post......good luck finding one you like, it will probably be a different brand!
Reply:I've worked for haybuster (farm and industrial equipment), john deere (seeders) and case (4wds, quadtracs, and payloaders) and all of them use valspar paint. Seems to hold up and knowing what I know about these companies, it has to be cheap. Not only can you get the paint by the gallon or drum, they make spray cans for touch up. I know rustoleum makes an industrial brand paint that we used to paint fixtures and jigs every so often, it's durable but spending their lives out of the sun I can't comment on uv durability. Reply:Thanks for all the replays. I found a solvent base paint locally made by Valley Paint. Seems to work well. Time will tell.Dynamic MetalworksMontrose, CODynMetalworks.com
Reply:I've had good luck with Dupli-Color engine paints. The Dupli Color nozzle puts the paint down really smooth.  Much much better than Rustolium.  As for durability.  I've put Dupli color down on straight metal and on top of Duplicolor primers (sealers, sandable and etching) with good results (stuff sitting outside exposed to sun/rain and not noticably fading.Bonus - Duplic Color Ford blue is a close match to Miller Blue so if you need to pain an old welder....I have gotten to know a shop that does sand blasting and powder coating.   They charge minums (1hr) so it doesn't make sense for small stuff. If painting an actual car....Etching primer zinc based - light coat.  It will look like it was absorbed by the metal.follwed by primer sealer (with a touch of flex additive).  2 coats.followed by top coat.  I know Sikkens flat black holds up nicely (front bumper of jeep wrangler).  The two coats of sealer act as a cushion.- Now a days, I understand that not all paints even need flex additives.  Don't know.  Just saying what worked on a 1990 paint job.  Front bumper of jeep was pretty much sand blasted and rusting.  Now it still looks new (like its fresh paint). The zinc/etching primer is supposed to actually absorb into the metal and should something get scratched, the scratch may rust, but right next to it should not.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:Endura paint. We have guys at work that cannot screw up applying it. It is tough as nails as well. We have used Sherwin Williams as well but I don't like it as much. It is much more tedious to apply, primer and clear are separate stages as well. More difficult to mix and get the same color as well.Miller Pro 30068 SA 20064 SAF 300305 G Lincoln gasserMiller 210
