Well I have came upon this trailer with no title for almost nothin and couldnt pass it up. I will also say this, I have researched trailers here to no end and now I am looking for thoughts, suggestions, and input PLEASE!! I want to get most of my thoughts together before I start. The tongue is 3" X 5" X I dont remember 3/16" or 1/4" thick. The frame by the fenders is 2" X 5" X by same thickness as above...... I dont remember. From the very tail end to the very tip of the tongue is 25'. From the tail end to where the frame comes into the tongue and makes the A shape is bout 16' and in this area is where I want to make the front of the deck. The tongue itself outside of the A frame is about 9'. I plan on sliding the tongue deeper into the trailer frame where only bout 48" will stick out past the deck when I am finished.I do not know what length I want the deck yet, but my thoughts now are 16' or 18'. Between the fenders is bout 74"- 78" and overall width from the fender outside to fender outside is about 99".I plan on making it a flat bed with 18" rails around 3 sides with a livestock top half or cage that will be bout 6' - 6'6" off the deck that will be removable and slides in and out which sits directly on the deck inside the rails of the trailer and probably only used a couple times a year. I cant see having 2 trailers if I can help it this is why I want to do this.Intended use to haul hay (this would be the most frequent), livestock, ATVs, maybe a car, steel, wood, and very seldom dirt, mulch, road base (these will be small quantities), but if I can help it I will just have it delivered. I would like to add cross members in between the frame, but I like the trailer in this thread a lot with the cross members over the top, but dont see me using I-beam, maybe 2" X 3" or  2" X 4" tubing. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=23938. Of course I would have side rails thou. The only problem I have putting across instead of in between is it will add to the height of the deck.I plan on changing out the axles. I think the current are 3,500lb axles, but with no legible markings and one having a quarter size rust hole on it I would rather just put new ones under it.What about getting it titled? I understand the DOT thing I drive a truck, but I have never tried to title a home made project before. I assume I will do this research after I build it, but some thoughts on it now will help keep it in the back of my mind. I know we used to just go down and get farm tags on things, but of course I was younger and never needed to know then. This project has almost climbed to the top of my list as necessity. What is your thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Attached ImagesLast edited by ToolBoxTavern; 01-25-2012 at 01:47 PM.We are on our way to being farmers! Reply:Cut off the tongue, and the two peices that tie the tongue to the frame rails. Save the axles and fenders and start from there. Everything else will be a waste of time and money.                                                     MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:well they say bad news comes in threes, this is the third trailer thread in two days. As you've already blown over sound advice about not trying to turn a boat trailer into a utility trailer. I'm going to point out a few design flaws.1. The tungue will need a complete redesign if you're going to be using it for a utility trailer. especially 1 with a GVWR of 7000+ lbs. In order to do this you're going to have to cut appart the existing frame, and new material, etc, etc, etc.2. The trailer you referenced was not a boat trailer before it was a utility trailer. It was a camper. the frame structure and purportions are completely different from a boat trailer and more suitable to be converted into a utility trailer. My suggestion to you is this, Clean that trailer up, get it retitled (Assuming you can) and sell it. use that money to buy a used flatbed trailer that fits your needs better. Then build off the trailer that was meant for the job you're intending for it.I'd put the money into getting new axles for it. you'll fetch a better price when selling and you'll have an easier time selling it.There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:No advise on the trailer build, but as for as getting a homebuilt title, it would sure would help if you took plenty of pictures along the way so you can prove you built it.. If you do to good a job, they may not believe its homebuilt. I would call your Motor Vehicle Dept. and about the procedure so there are no surprises when your done. Better safe than sorry.

Reply:Tool Box Tavern,  I can appreciate your desire to use that frame, and I have a few thoughts on how to do it, but you need to know if you will be able to title it or not. When I built mine, I looked into getting a home built title here in PA, and decided that it was just not worth the hassle.  It is possible, but ridiculous to actually do. That is one reason I chose to use that camper frame, (which was already very close to what I wanted to have). Hopefully the great state of Texas is more friendly on this, but if it isn't, the rest of the discussion is moot.

Reply:Can't help you with the title thing, but as far as trailer building goes......1) Check out the inside of the square tube for rust, if it was used in salt water especially. In that case I would be sure of it's age, because galvanized trailers don't last that long. I generally would build a boat trailer from I-beam or channel for that reason: you can't properly rinse salt out of tubing very well. Square / rectangular tube frames on boat trailers look an awful lot better on the outside than they are inside! If the axle has a rust hole in it, I suspect the frame has holes or soon-to-be holes. 2) Is there no capacity indication / serial number plate? Looks like about a 5000 lb GVW. Fenders and wheels look like they might have been replaced. Plate would give the year also.3) generally, boat trailers have a long tongue to accommodate the extra overhang the bow of a boat has. Also, the axles are placed further back to be under the boat's centre of gravity, which is well behind the mid-point of the boat. If the load you are hauling is centred too much further forward than a boat, you might have unbearable tongue weight. Shortening the hitch to axle distance makes it a bit harder to back up, also. 4) I've seen people rebuild these trailers and still have to ask $3000. for them just to get their money back. This trailer isn't that much new.My opinion is that you would be better served by having a trailer for your needs. As I've indicated above, boat trailers can be pretty rotten ( especially if used in salt water), and hide a lot of problems that might not be apparent at first glance.Fools speak when they want to say something; the wise speak when they have something to say

Yes, I researched even your trailer thread before I posted and I bet that is a utilty trailer today and not an ATV trailer. If the tongue was slid 5ft in to the frame I believe it would be plenty strong.I know the trailer I referenced to was not a boat trailer, just like your trailer revamp was not a utility trailer, but that was pointed out to YOU!! Do you think everybody is blind?Thanx for your reply and that is a great suggestion.

Reply:The link is for farm trailers only. If you were hauling ATV's, cars etc. this might be hard to explain. In Washington state, you are supposed to have receipts for materials but if it looks well built they tend to just give it a quick look over. If it looks suspect, they will go over it with a fine toothed comb.I agree with what was posted before. If the axles have huge rust holes in them, the rest of the tubing has got to be suspect. Several years ago I was given a used boat trailer to make an implement to grade a yard and although the metal looked OK from the outside with decent paint, it was absolute cancer on the inside of the tube. I ended up scraping the whole thing.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"After looking at the pictures again, and the comments about the tubing construction, and the rust hole in the axle, I have to agree that I would be very suspicious of the condition of the inside of that frame. I like to work with tubing, and it's strength to weigh cannot be beat for certain applications, but I am not a big fan of it when it comes to corrosion. Unless you get a camera inside, and have some thickness testing done, you don't know what you have. As RaptorDuner pointed out, it could look ok on the outside, but be junk. Personally I like channel. Easy to paint, and will outlast tubing by many years.IF, and that's a big IF, I was able to confirm the condition of the steel was not degraded, I would cut that tongue off as close to the "A" as I could, and still mount the coupler on it, measure back 42", and start my deck there. The axles would have to move back, and the deck size would probably wind up @ 12 or13 feet. Shorter than you want. It's tough not seeing it in person, but to have the deck length you want, it doesn't seem like it makes sense to start with that frame. That tongue style is not designed to have a utility trailer deck out on top of it, and I think you are asking for trouble if you do that. I realize you probably don't want to hear this, but I think Thor's suggestion of fixing that up as is, maybe with new axles, paint, and lights, and selling it for a profit to spend on what you really need would serve you better. I didn't really keep close track of what I spent, but I can tell you for sure that it is not cheaper to build your own. I did it because I wanted something that I could not buy.Good luck , and thanks for the compliment. I have been very pleased with mine. One of my buds has taken a liking to it as well. For a while, I wasn't sure who used it more!
Reply:Well here seems to be the new game plan after talkin to this guy bout selling me his goose neck I am gonna make a light duty trailer out of this to haul occasional lumber, steel, ATVs and etc. No cars or anything like that. Gonna put more thought into this and we will see what comes up.Just a bit more info. The center of axles to the tail end is 5ft and from the center of axles to A frame part where the front deck will be is 11ft......
