Hello All, Here are some pics of a pan I welded for a JD dealership. One of the bolts was still in the pan when removal was attempted and a crack resulted. Sorry my pics are not so good. Attached Images

Reply:It looks like the crack extends beyond the weld in the last photo, maybe just something on the photo. If that's the case, it looks like it will last the life of the tractor, if I'm wrong on the extended crack.

Reply:Maybe I'm missing something here, or the photos are misleading, but....It would appear that the crack was not V'd out to accept new filler, and nowhere near enough heat (either preheat or amps) was used. Looks to me like the bead is simply sitting on top (rather than flowed into) the base metal.Probably will hold, since it's just to prevent a leak (not structural), but I think I would have approached it differently.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Have to agree with Sundown the welds are cold, no flow. I too think it will seal but I would like to see the sides of the weld wetted in more."Liberalism is a mental disorder" Dr. Savage
Reply:Hi Everyone, I need to write more with my pics. The cracks were Ved out and washed before I welded it. When I heated the pan before I started welding it became clear that the cracks had spider webbed indicating a stressful break at this point once the heating started they all opened up so this is for the three and four wide beads and I welded it all with two passes. I welded it at 190 deg. and preheated it to about 300 deg at the area of the break and maintained that and more once the welding started. Should I run more amps and or more preheat temp?? Thanks for the comments and would appricate any good honest advice Dale ps The pan has been installed and holding oil
Reply:From my experience of aluminum pans with cracks is, normally the crack will show up while welding. Even when not visible after cleaning when you start welding down the crack the aluminum will separate where the crack is. I have seen it before where a 1" visible crack will turn into a 4" long weld because the actual crack will show its face while welding along. |
