Hi folks,I've been lurking here for some time, soaking up as much information as possible. I've been wanting to learn how to TIG weld for quite some time for my business. I decided to take a week and attend Lincoln's Welding School and do their week-long TIG class. I did recaps on each day and posted them on my blog. I figured I'd share them here in case anyone is considering the class and was looking for some information on it. I scoured the web before I decided to take the class and didn't come up with much. I'm hoping my recaps are of some use to some prospective students. Overall, I was very impressed. The facilities and instructors were fantastic. It's never a convenient time to take a week out of the shop. If I'm not working, no cash is coming in. But this was a great investment. If for no other reason but to have 6 hours of uninterrupted seat time every day. I had my phone shut off and made the most of the time. I stayed late and worked through most lunches. They were very accommodating. So anyway, the links for days 1-3 are below. I'm still have to do my day 4 recap. I'll come back and post it here. Now, all I have have left to do is practice for the next 40 years. Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 1...Day 4...
Reply:It's good to see that you regarded this as an investment. Any new skills that you acquire will only serve to make you more profitable as a welder. Good Job and Good Luck!
Reply:Nice improvement on day 4!  Keep up the practice.
Reply:I think I should just go up and take some classes. SInce the CC doesnt cover much mig and tig just mostly stick.
Reply:Indeed, nice improvement. You seem to have picked up on it quickly However, in case your instructors didn't point it out to you, all of your aluminum welds looked "cold". They were pretty decent overall, but were "laying on top" of the joint more than you'd like to see. They looked good for a beginner though, pretty consistent beadsGive me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
Reply:Thanks! Yeah, the aluminum was pretty frustrating for me and the guys did mention that I was too cold. It seemed like if I got it much hotter with either more amps or slower travel speed, I started to over cook it and the ripples simply washed away. I need to get some stock and get practicing. I really appreciate the feedback though!
Reply:What sort of amperage were you running on the aluminum, and thickness of the material? (I'm assuming 1/8", but correct me if not)More heat + faster travel speed is what you want, you look close thoughGive me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
Reply:That was all 1/16" 6061. 1/16" 5356 rod. Machine was set at 60 or 65 amps; I forgot to make a note for that set of samples, but it was in that range. I was certainly having more of an issue with coordination with the aluminum compared to 4130 (the tubing samples), steel, and stainless. My tendency with the aluminum was to slow down as I went along. I need to work on maintaining a rhythm. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Reply:Keep practicing on the tubing. Concentrate on your rhythm and dip spacing. Work on the s/s as well, paying attention to sugaring on the back side. When you are able to control your heat, then move on to aluminum. If you aren't using an amptrol now, you will need it for aluminum. Considering the gauge thickness of the practice materials that you chose, you are off to an excellent start. Most beginners would get frustrated if starting out on anything less than 12 ga.
Reply:Thanks, Pro-Fab! I'm putting together an order with Dillsburg for a couple of 17' lengths of 1.125 x 0.028 4130 tubing to get practicing on. I figure I'll start making mock frame front triangles so that I can start getting used to the positions.I'm using this picture as inspiration. We all need a goal, right?
